Phono stage sounds better with old caps?

Never seen Panasonic FC caps? 😱

Yes, a measurement or two would go a very long way to telling you - and us - what may or may not - be going on. It's nice that you have sockets there which will make comparison measurements easy.

There's definitely a sound difference with all caps being replaced with FC's, the sound is much cleaner but also much thinner with the treble sounding even a little harsh... I haven't allowed them to break in yet. Should I try running this pre with the FCs for a week or so? I placed sockets instead of the "suspected" caps so I can easily switch between them.

One thing that I've just noticed is that the old Siemens read 530uf while the new FC read 430uf, with both types marked "470uf"...

Burn them in for a few days. Leave the unit on and/or perhaps feed some signal through it.

As for vintage Siemens electrolytics are still being sold on ebay and elsewhere as NOS parts. There might be something to their sound.
If they measure well after all these years just leave them in.

Or you could parallel your Panasonic with a film cap to improve its sound. Or even with an ex-Soviet PIO if space allows it.

"It is best to avoid modern generic electrolytic capacitors like the plague."

What's the alternative then? keep using those 40 years old caps?

I know, I´m going out on a limb here, since the "measuring mafia" already have decided, that there is no difference. To my ears nothing could be more wrong.
Nichicon Gold Tune, newly produced Frolyt EKR series & Rubycon Black Gates (far to expensive & too many fakes) will give you some of the warm sound, you´re after. And remember to leave the unit on 24/7 for a couple of days after exchange 🙂

gilwe,
the unobtainability of parts suitable to be used in audio is a tangible problem. At variance with the folkloric orthodoxy, a low ESR and a small capacitance to volume ratio ruin performance.
Kudos, most people would not have noticed the difference.

analog_sa,
you should always listen carefully to my advice.
