Best ADC on the market today?

Hey everyone - what's the current top spec for an ADC PCB or module on the market today?

I'm looking at the TI PCM4222EVM but this appears to be a version form a couple years ago. What's the current top chip? Anything up to 130dB or 140dB?

It would be ideal to find something with a USB interface. But I'll make whatever work :)

It Seems Your in The Right Lane With The PCM4222 Chip Because as far as i know it is One Of The higher Specced ADC On Tha Market, The AK5394A Was That When i Bought it But as stated that was a few years Back and i have just comed Around To Re Investigate the subject... :deerman::emoticon:

Ontop Of a 14 Hour Workday so as I am totaly energy emptyed

And just when i was about to log of and Call it a Night i Came ACROSS Your in My Opinion Important Question.....

There Is an Unbalance with to much Focus On DaC's Where It rather Should Be On The ADC In My Opinion,,

Because Much Of the errors & Artefacts From the ADC Side Of the Audio Chain Is Totaly UnCorectable Later In The Audio Chain...

A While Back I Actualy Bought The AKM AK 5394a But Has'nt Gotten Around To Actually Build it yet, It Was intended As Tha Ultimate BlameLess ADC With All Fleshed out Local Shunt Suply's and Low Distrtion HighCurrent ADC Input Buffer/Limiter,, Low JiTTer Local Clock and so on.....

To Play my Vinyl Chain Into Digital Storage And Playback Chain

But I Guess There Have Been Some Progress in Last Couple years So Was About in Nearest Future To ReSearch & DownLoad Some More PDF's

My current ADC is AD7768(8channel,24bit, up to 256k/sample ), which has an excellent performance in THD and SNR.

One ADC in 27kHz BW is 114.5dBSNR. If you want high SNR, what you should do is to parallel 8 ADCs; 9 dB improvement. Another solution is to use a 5V reference instead of 4V. My PCB has 126.5dB SNR with a 5V reference. This is one of the highest performance available for a DIYer. The attached pic includes a footprint of a notch. But you can have more than 120dB SFDR without a notch filter. The best scenario is to use two PCBs: one for THD, the other for SNR. It's not expensive to have two PCBs.The output of AD7768 isn't standard IIS. FPGA isn't mandatory since AD has an application note to use ARM instead of FPGA.

I 've Spent the Last hour reading the FAQ, trying to Find out how to make and Upload Pic's to an Profile Album (Gave uP For now)

wich it states in The FAQ should be possible in the User CP...:confused:


I Have A Bheringer setup as

An combined Active Filter / DaC /PreAmp / LineDriver,

Wich Of the Last 2-3 points has been on a rather steady development & testing, i can see that you have done some soldering on your ADC Board there, Aplause To you there :) xx3stksm
You Must Have quite the solder skills

i Remember meself Proud as a God when i first managed to Desolder An VSOP 28 Chip - AK4393

(( Had To Pull Out ALL Stops including Gravity))

Wich on the Bheringer PCB Was exchanged / Upgraded To An AK4396,

And now there is in the works To upgrade This To Some Even Newer DAC's With Probably The BurrBrown/Ti- SRC-4192 In/On Every DAC Line,
Have Been Thinking of the PCM 1794, AK4399 For Now, To mention A Few.............
But More To Tha point Of this Thread.....

And as we All know the Bheringer DCX 2496

is build to be robust Semi Pro Product, with little or no Regard To Hi-Fi And as i'm beginning to be quite satisfyed with the results of the Upgrades on The Output Part Of The Bheringer, More Numbers Of & More Local and isolated PwrSuplyes To The different sections, Low Jitter Clocks and so on...


The Input Section / ADC side is Just as Crappy And Full Of Mediocre OP_Amp chips And cheapo poor Electrolytics in the signal path as the Output section Was....

So I was Thinking Of An No Expences Spared Best In/On Market ADC To Make Possible Analog Input with High Fidelity, And Also Possibly to Make Digital Storage On My PC, of Some Of My Records in My Vinyl Collection.. So Would have to Make An SP/DIF Output Also then...



To That Point i was trying to source some information googling a lot around the net and so on, A couple of days Ago, But there was impessive little on ADC's At Least in relation To Numerous DAC Article & Pages And Most of What i found was reviews from record makers studios and so on of/from Complete comercial ADC Products More Related To Professional And Studio Usage, And From in wich the same Pages / reviews sounded like there was little or no D.I.Y Thoughts involved, :yikes:

And Little Or Nothing at All That Pointed to Any Specific ADC Chip On Todays Market i Guess That Even The Comercial Chip makers Are More Focused On The DAC Market's rather then

The market on ADC Chips...:confused:
Wich in My Own Opinion is The Last frontier Of Digital Audio Where Big Topolgy Changes & Improvements Can Be Had...:c_flag:

Anyways Some Questions About ya CooL Setup

1. If the 7768 ADC Does Not Output AudioData In Any PCM I2S Format Wich formats is available (DSD maybe.??))


2.As i use fully Balanced signal transfer in my whole chain from Vinyl cartridge To Amplifyers i Wonder is it Possible To Paralell Al Eight Channels in it, into One High SNR Output channel...


3.Have you made / designed the boards yourself or are it some kind of kit, development board or somthing possible to by more or less redy to tweak..
 
The 7768 ADC For HiFi Or Not..

As Far As i Can xx3stksm see Your ADC does not seemed geared towards High Fidelity Audio But rather it's A Measuring ADC..


The AK 5397 Is at THD+N 121, 127, OR Up To 130 Db Wich is by far better then even the 7768 with all 8 channels paralelled and 9 Db Improvement you mention.??

I'm Sorry if my writing was a problem it's mmh habbits i guess, and as stated earlier I'm only a day old member here...


And would only apreciate pointers on and rules.. :)



Althoug i have been reading on and of for some 20-25 years and all that time frustrated that has not had the abillity to Reply...


And Neither have i claimed to be an English teacher, As my English is rather Poor, Altough funny that i Speak with people worldwide on a regualar basis, i'll guess i have gotten by quite allright so it has'nt bothered neither me or as far as i know the people i have spoken with on the different HF & VHF Bands...




And i was Absolutley.!!

Not aware of any rules on Letters capitol or not,

i have strived more with how to attach pdf files and pictures to replys here,

Have You looked at the last ones that i attached, the link to the akm site is directly to the selection page and the AK5397EQ That one is Right uP There in just under or up to 130 Db Range You requested....

Huh. I've never considered ADC's in parallel. Sounds like about 126dB SNR is about the best they come at the moment as far as what's available on the market.

It's too bad. I'd prefer to have an ADC that can digitize analog to a higher fidelity than what a modern DAC may be able to resolve.

I think some may be annoyed by the flipping of characters. I was - I could not focus on your message. And maybe it reflects badly back on to you not being taken serious here but more like a jest.

Stick with a Capital letter of the binning of the first works in a sentence and you will be fine ;) No forum rules that I know of so no problem there... except for that on the net, capital letters in a row is considered shouting.

The AD7768 has a nonstandard SPI because of multiplexing their eight outputs. If you want an audio standard interface, you need to have some conversion logic. It's a handy solution to use FPGA because it can include Ir controller, SPDIF, PLL for an external clock, and LVDSed IIS.


The AD7768 itself doesn't have internal parallel logic. I usually use FPGA for such additional functions. But specialized chip for audio usage like AK5578 is more convenient because it has internal summing logic and standard IIS output. If you want the LVDS interface or more, it's another story.
The AK5578 with 8 to 1 mode without A filter is probably 128dBSNR: the highest number now available. I haven't experienced AK ADCs. One of the difficulties with ADC design is the way of driving analog inputs. Each manufacture has its particularness. I'm familiar with AD, not AKM. That's the reason I use AD7768.


The AD7768 also has EV board like other ADCs. But it's designed to the universal use, not convenient for a particular application. I designed the board myself. The schematic of the EV board was a handy reference for my design.
 
Hard to find much on the AK5578. I was hoping someone built a product with it and has some confirmed performance metrics. Or even a platform ready to go. No luck.

The PCM4222EVM board is fairly cheap at $175 and shows 124dB SNR. I'm not seeing anything any better than 124dB. Anyone know another option?

This Mytek BROOKLYN ADC claims to reach a SNR of 130dB. $2000 isn't bad considering other products making the same claim are $10,000+

At least from what I have read, for instrumentation the AK5394 is still the best that was made, but it is unfortunately discontinued.

The AK5572 looks very interesting... theoretically it can do -112dB THD. Note sure about noise though- from what I've read, noise above the audio band is a big problem for some of these when it comes to measurement usage. The QFN package isn't the most DIY friendly. Still, at about $7 it hurts less to kill one soldering than if it were a $30 chip.
