Pro ject evo9 tonearm

Forgot to ask... Is it easy for you to adjust/ aligne thé cartridge? For example do you have the hex key to raise or lower the tonearm? Do you have the Pro-ject protractor too?

You can gain a lot by properly setting up your cartridges.

Hi freebie,my amp has no mc input and I don’t want to go to the extra cost of a preamp, the compatability tables are confusing as some in Japanese 100hz and others in 10hz, I want to get the correct compatability first time as I haven’t got infinite funds to play with!

Indeed the indicated compliance with Japanese cartridges is different. It's also not an exact science, but it can be calculated Blog Table of Contents. I would normally look at the weight of the cartridge and the down force. If it's similar to the old one it will most likely work fine. As far as I know your tone arm is medium compliance, so all the mentioned cartridges should be fine (specified counterweight suitable for cartridges weighing between 5-7.5g, 7-10g and 10-14g). What do or don't you like about your setup at the moment? What are you looking for?

You could also look at Audio Technica. In general all manufactures have a 'sound' signature. Often the more expensive cartridges have a Shibata, Micro Ridge, VdH etc. stylus tip which is great for retrieving more info from your records. However, there is a risk that you will no longer listen to lesser produced/ condition albums. 🙂

The arm is 8gm mass so I thought that would be low, the setup at the moment sounds good to me apart from the sibilance that’s annoying me, cymbals don’t sound clean.

My mistake, 10 grams and below is of course low mass. I was thinking of my old Pro-Ject tone arm. Could you try a turntable mat to see if this will reduce the sibilance? (is there a change when playing 180 or 200 grams records?) Ortofon is in my opinion a 'clean' but musical sounding cartridge with excellent treble.

Normally they use 100pf, but Ortofon might prefer higher (I believe 400pf in total, including the capacitance of the interlink). You could add capacitance if you made a new phono cable by using a capacitor. Or, if I were you, invest the money you would otherwise spend on a new cartridge in building a new phono amp like the Salas Simplistic NJFET RIAA which is one of the best available. (or build a cheap Hiraga design)

If you were to upgrade in the future you wouldn't have to invest in a decent phono amp 🙂
