Hi all,

Introduction
I'm planning on making a soundbar, because my tv-speakers are trash.
I don't want to spend more than 100 euro, but 80 would be perfect. I already have a big sheet of hardwood plywood. I did make a DIY boombox in the past, but i dont want to use car-speakers again because of the dimensions.

What do I want?
I'm thinking about a soundbar with 2 full range max 4" drivers. I do have a a 6" passive radiator laying around and I'm planning to use it to boost the low frequencies. It will be a little bit deeper and less wide soundbar than is common to fit the passive radiator on the bottom.
It will be powered by an 2x100w TDA7498 class D amplifier.

Picking Drivers
Now, I need to pick my drivers. As I live in the Netherlands, I cant use every american site to get drivers for cheap.
I was hoping that you guys can give your opinion about my picks.

1. € 10,40/piece: VISATON FRS 8 M - 8 Ohm
2. € 28,40/piece: Dayton Audio RS75-4 3" 4 Ohm\
3. € 33,45/piece: Tang Band W2-803SM 2" Extended Range Speaker
4. € 39,95/piece: Dayton Audio Reference RS100-4
5. ?

Maybe someone has a good suggestion for a good sounding driver between 10 and 30 euro's, I'm not planning on making a crossover.

Thanks for reading!

I'm not sure if there is value in a soundbar other than aesthetics. Human brains are overwhelmed by visual processing during movies so we have little left over for audio processing. Your brain won't localize audio on a source coming from directly beneath the TV it will localize on the images. If your audio source is located to the right your brain will interpret the audio as though it is coming from the center of the TV because that's where your concentration is focused.

As we age our brain processing slows further and makes it difficult to contend with stereo signals while watching TV dialogue. Consequently, older adults prefer a single mono channel to stereo channels.

If you aren't limited by the aesthetics of a soundbar you get the advantage of using a traditional speaker design.

Hello,
I just made a little Box with 2 x Visaton-frs8m, and 2 x 4" passive radiators (ca4.5l).
And it is awesome, those speakers have a really powerfull motor.
And are cheap af.
2 Years ago i made 2 Line Arrays for PA purposes with 8pc each and they are better than
everything we used before.
Cant say anything about your other options, but with frs8m u cant do nothing wrong.

The goal of audio for video should be to improve the 2 dimensional image......I would want to start with more impact so low frequency response would be my primary goal. I think in a conventional sound bar design, the efficiency of a passive radiator might be lost to a few well designed ports.

The RS100 by far is going to give you lower bass response of all of the drivers you have mentioned with an F3 of 60hz ported. Yes, it’s response isn’t as extended and the others for me, hi fidelity wouldn’t be the primary goal so.....

I concur, I built my center speaker with 4 R10-SC 4" full range drivers and 2 4" PRs. Sounds excellent. Visaton speakers are perfect for something like this application.

Vittorio do you have a drawing of that unit? I'm goimg in the same direction. 110cm wide, 15cm tall and 33-35cm deep.

Hi Toaster, if you refer to my picture, sorry I have no drawings. It's a partially unfolded Lance, designed for Fostex FF85wk. Amazing design and driver, thanks to designer Scottmoose.

Rest of the box is empty space for matching tv/self dimensions. Custom made :).
