Help with efficient 2-way bookshelf design

For the moment I'm thinking the A10p in the FHXL.

That is a great combo. Response into the mid 30s, and with the horn gain, often have to use more damping to reduce the bass.

Flat paks are also available from Bob Berner.

The adjustability of the bass output means that the speaker can be adjusted to best match the amplifiers output impedance, so you are good there.

I do have a question for those who are more knowledgeable wrt SE tube amps… don’t the OPTs need to be gapped?

I have seen toroids used for PP amps with careful balance, but how do you do an SE with a toroid OT?

How big is the box and how low does it go. It is not immune to Hoffman’s Iron Law.

..90 dB. With a pretty flat impedance curve.

I'm sure it doesn't go that low, I certainly wouldn't expect it to.. (..which might be the reason I initially thought: powered subwoofer accompaniment.)

-with respect to the 10P:

90 db really depends on the bandwidth you are spec.ing for the small stand mounted monitor requested, and the size/shape of the baffle.

With baffle step compensation it isn't going to be 90 db.

Without baffle step compensation you'll likely have a dip above 100 to 400 Hz (not including floor bounce effects which will make this more pronounced and wider in bandwidth). ..and this is factoring-in the higher output impedance effect of the amplifier reacting to the rising impedance of the driver in-box. You could improve on that further by significantly undersizing the cabinet, but it's not going to sound as good and bass depth with be further decreased.

I wouldn't call the Impedance "flat".

90db is far from enough with 300b set. you need at least, 95db minimum

Depends on how big your room and how loud you listen.

I put a set of 1st gen ACA (5w) into the system with the big 87 dB MTM for a listen and they stayed for almost a year (to be replaced by the newer ones). I am in a big room and i rarely had to turn i tdown because it was audiably clipping. And my room is big. I have also enjoyed 2A3 SE with even less efficient (otherwise easy to drive speakers).

Much more important than rated power is how gracefully an amplifier clips (becasue they all do), and with an SE flattish impedance (and the resulatant low reactance) load is more important than ultimate efficiency.
