Yes Tim, that was precisely the connection I was thinking of! 😀Yes Galu, and you must be prodding me back on topic...
I've replaced my $2k class a amp with a cheap Yuan Jing TPA3116 board that I heavily modded, to the expense of 90 bucks in total. And it sounds better.
Discuss 🙂
TI makes some nice "sounding" stuff. Works well within the category of "Whatever they're doing right, I for one can hear it and it's enough to choose to stick with / base my system on one of their products". Enough to buy a second instance to have on hand in case of an accident with the 1st one.
Now I have a pile of tube amps / DACs to sell. Not looking forward to that effort -

Give them for free.
"Same goes for cars, anything."
Your reference to consumerism illustrates what I see as another neurotic expression, compulsive and even competitive acquisition, locked into OCD.
Maybe this virus will cause people to reflect a little on their values, see what loops and traps they are in, and realise that we can validate ourselves on how we behave towards the planet, life, and others, rather than showing off our possessions.
People have grown kind of "shallow" and "vapid" over the years, indeed, consumer products/advertising have helped foster that type of thinking.
The old "Keeping up with the Jones" saying has turned into something resembling evil.
Like sheep or puppets being led, the masses are pushed continually to buy-buy -buy......
Living beyond your means, or creating dept through credit cards is common.
The mentality of people have been controlled - delusions of living in a "free society" are just that, a delusion.
Since this is ingrained from childhood, it's invisible to most, and people have all sorts of arguments to validate their behavior, much like an alcoholic or drug addict resists/denies confronting their addictions.
Look at the "smartphone" industry - we never needed to carry around a damn phone with us, and we lived just fine, actually.
The "smart phone" is aptly named, it allows a person to be as dumb as a rock by being a convenient battery-operated part of the brain to rely on.
We had our "freedoms" pretty much intact, and you have to admit that "those days" were pretty nice, society was more "relaxed".
If we needed something, we sought out the supplier or seller, and proceeded accordingly, we used common sense, we were "reasonable" and satisfied.
Now? - we're bombarded with advertising, hype, for things we don't really need - in hopes that continually pushing it in our faces will cause the weaker ones to submit and pull out their credit cards.
It's all under the label of "improving your life, making it better".
And in some cases, it is........ but who's to determine or know of the honest nessessity?

Why did you buy tube amps? What dacs did you buy?
That's the norm on internet forums, either naturally or intentionally.Your focus is off.
Why are so many here bothered by what others do or do not do ?
Or what other people buy.🙄

Because in many cases, what one person does reflects, indirectly or directly, on what others do.
Let me put it to you in plain english....
If the market is poised to produce a product based on someone else's findings, it now, in some ways, forces others to follow suit.
For instance:
I wanted to purchase a new single-disk CD player for my stereo system, and at the time, the market was flooded with only multi-disk machines - for whatever reason.
Was it a current trend?
Was it marketing?
The "new" thing to buy?
I eventually sourced out a "vintage" single-play machine of good quality, I didn't want what they were offering at the time, I knew what I wanted.
It's a matter of controlling the population, and I don't want that in my life, I want choices, freedoms, although it seems that some don't care.
They'll take whatever's available and handed to them.
Like sheep.
Do you mean what other people buy and post claims about it online? How would you know what I (hundreds or thousands of miles away) bought if I didn't tell you?Or what other people buy.🙄

But surely that is the other side of the freedom you cherish. The manufacturers are also free to manufacture only that which they consider profitable. If I were to wake up one morning and decide a penny-farthing is what I want no one is under any obligation to provide one for sale to me no matter how much I rant and rave. Freedom, it would seem, cuts both ways.
In the same way you are free to not buy the $12000 turntable others are free to buy the $120,000 turntable.

That's indeed true.
But those turntables, even if I had the "play money" to spend on them, are nevertheless rediculously priced.
Asides from inflation, the Cost Of Living increases, etc., they are born from devil's greed, masked as something they are not...
In other words, false, fake, obscene objects designed to intrigue the mind in some twisted way.
That's playing with others minds, and not something "nice" in my book.
Anyone who "sticks up" and attempts to justify things that I know are full of bull, are "bought" by the hype.
It's likely that they were brought up that way - in some delusional world.
Humans can outrun antelopes in terms of the distance. After some distance when an antelope overheats, it can't run anymore, then human hunters go for the kill with their tools. How can humans do it? We sweat which helps to cool our body.
When was the last time you went antelope hunting?
I lived a long time in Wyoming, where there are lots of antelopes, and where hunters hunt them every autumn. I never witnessed a hunter running after a running antelope. I knew a lot of antelope hunters, and none could outrun an antelope. I saw a lot of running antelopes however. I worked everyday where they lived.
Have you ever shopped for the tools to make something like that? Have you seen what a competent machinist gets paid? It's not like some guy in a garage is doing this machining on a few $400 tools he bought at Home Depot. But those turntables, even if I had the "play money" to spend on them, are nevertheless rediculously priced.
Yes, these companies are so greedy that they frequently go out of business.Asides from inflation, the Cost Of Living increases, etc., they are born from devil's greed, masked as something they are not...
Didn't it ever occur to you that I was referring to the very early period in human history? When was the last time you went antelope hunting?

I bought a couple of Jolida's and a old Sophia Electric. Figured I'd play with them, perhaps fix them up for resale. Lucky if I get a fraction of my original investment, but it was fun playing around with them. I've owned stereo tube amps at various points in my life and seems to be a fad that I try and relinquish, rinse and repeat over the ensuing decades. Admittedly, I've probably never owned a really good one in all that time.
I have a cheap Behringer, an Asus U7, a miniDSP and an Aune T1. The only one of those I actually like the sound of is the Aune. I'd consider trying other DACs, but my system has the requirement that I need both DSP for driver crossover and a sound I like. The U7 was supposed to handle that (with PC software) but I didnt like how it sounded.
The solution I'm currently using has 5 things going for it;
- It has a sound I like, however TI did it.
- It does the crossover functions I need in DSP.
- It's powerful enough to handle 99.9% of my listening, with the particular speakers I'm using.
- I could leave it on indefinitely (Every time I own a tube amp, the tubes cook longer doing nothing than listening to music; usually due to a mistake on my or someone else's part)
- It connects wirelessly to my music sources. If I want a quick background while cooking dinner, just grab my phone. If I want to listen to my collection or watch a movie, boot up the PC. There's no longer any RCA cables in my system.
Didn't it ever occur to you that I was referring to the very early period in human history?
Of course I knew you were just referring to something you read, rather than anyone's personal experience, modern or early.

Well, or course.😕

Well, I have a hard time imagining that anything on diyaudio has any influence at all on any market force, especially something written in the bs threads like this one.
