UV would be handy though. we got lumbered with inside out eyes.
Why UV?
IR yes, I can understand that for avoiding predators at night or hunting for prey, but not sure what UV brings to the party.

Well I got my mono ortofon hooked up this evening. This is a bust MC10 I got cheap off ebay, with a cantilever off a signet MM stylus that was grafted on and then the coils rotated 45 degrees to give sum and difference outputs. Set miniDSP to duplicate input 1 to both outputs and jobs a goodun
I didn't want this to work as well as it has TBH. I would have been happy if it was ok, but no better than a mono switch. But it really does drop the noise down. I'll be playing a lot of old Deccas in the next week.
Sadly it has also shown me I need to crack on with my new preamp as the old one is just short of gain. Or is that a positive

UV allows you to see ripe fruit on trees. That's why the birds always get to your plums and cherries before you do. They can see it from miles away.

Doubt it. Have you ever looked at deep black birds like crows? They ain't black, their feathers do seem to reflect blue and purple, hardly visible, only under direct sunlight. My sense is that in the UV spectrum, many black birds are very colourful. They can see it, their predators don't. Clever adaptation.

So it’s an adaptation to make them morevisible to their kind, or perhaps linked to reproduction?
Separately, David Attenborough did a show a few years back on photo fluorescence in nature. We can’t see it (only in extreme cases like lantern beetles/fire flies for example) but many, many species fluoresce and especially ocean dwellers.

I did and should have quoted that rather than the fruit. We have some kestrels living quite close and I love watching them. The Sparrowhawks have not been seen for a while, which is a shame as there are a couple of pigeons attacking the garden they could eat
And in science news* Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment . I find this fascinating. Trying to come up with a better solution to the tried and tested photomultiplier tubes has clearly caused much fun in the lab. You need something that will work at 88K and use a small enough amount of power that it won't boil the liquid argon its immersed in. I can't possibly see anything going wrong with that.

I doubt Mother Nature would have specifically hobbled mice with UV fluorescing urine for the kestrels benefit. Rather, all urine (and other body fluids) fluoresce under UV exposure, and the kestrels ability to see into UV - like other birds - allows it to see its prey.
I don’t know of any instances where an animal evolves to specifically be the prey of another, but maybe George will dig something up and prove me wrong.

The closest to that is a nematode that makes mice less fearful and become easier prey for cats where it has the next phase of its life cycle.
