Today a work colleague called in sick with a high fever, after coming to work as usual yesterday, with a persistent heavy cough.
I am in the UK and we are apparently a few weeks behind the breaking waves, we are told. I am so paranoid, I have taken the day off.
I give it a week, at most 2 weeks, before we are deep in this mire, so I'm astounded that the US and EU have not gone further yet (other than trying to secure emerging treatment for their citizens alone... or for profiteering.)
Trump doesnt shock me, but Merkel...so much for the solidarity of the Eurozone. I just hope our leaders can grow a global outlook, rather than nationalism, and relations arent damaged as a result.
Bonsai,
The funny thing is, you cant blame people eating meat for this...
CJD aka BSE, was not caused by eating animals.
It was caused by making cows eat dead cows - and cannibalism is never right!

Stay at home!
The virus has a high speed of contagion!
All countries now are following the indication that we have in Italy since 10 days ago!!
and for the next days these indication will became more strictly.

But since this started in January in china and till now (March end(Total approx 10/12 weeks)) the data available says 2/3% deaths in china out of total infected people. But Italy and Iran which I think had more recent outbreak (in Just 2/3 weeks) has confirmed approx. 7% death. What does this tells us? Were real figures not shared of earlier outbreak?<snip>
1. Italy has a very high percentage of elderly. This would push up the death rate.
2. There's a lag between contracting the virus, showing symptoms and the official tally. That is what the link in the OP points to, take a close look at it. The worse off the country is economically and in healthcare terms, the bigger the lag.
3. Almost everyone takes time to show symptoms, and tests are limited to those with symptoms at this time in most countries. This means there is transmission among untested individuals, which will eventually be captured by the system as they get tested.
The real rates at this point are only determined by estimation, based on the China numbers. At some point statisticians will work out a way to correlate population age distribution with both infection and fatality rates, but this is uncharted territory.
It is likely the infection will be around for a while, hopefully we will figure out a way to deal with it in time. As of now staying healthy, maintaining good hygiene and getting fresh air and exercise along with respecting social distancing norms are the best options for the healthy.
The main problem is that there isn't a real value of asyntomatic people with virus that are the ones that can transfer it to the other people.
To do this all people must the tested and this is very hard to do.
We in Italy all the hospital are free o charge, no money are asked but the doctors and nurses are limited, of course.
The average age of the death people is over 65 years old, mainly with an history of other illnesses but now there are also an increasing on young people.

I wish that I could (replying to a global comment), but the UK response has been the most lacklustre by far, and as yet, only those who have a job constrained to a desk, can work at home and stay out of the public.
The recent photgraphs/video of multiple intubated "under 40s" expecting a 2 week hospital stay, from Italian media, is downright scary.
Mr. Boris have had a incorrect approach to the problem. I can say a stupid approach.
Until few days ago he said that no restriction are planned!!
And now!?!?!?
I repeat, the speed of contagion is very fast!!!

Probably Italy was quick to check and report.

I fear for India because the Holi festival few days ago. India gvt say to be prudent but noone listened to cause Holi is a powerfull tradition and a happyness moment with sharing.
I believe in the areas where there are no turists or indian workers that fly it's ok but in the big cities, and famous places turists visited it had be very dangerous, touching faces to color each others, water....
What are the news from your country please ? When I want to calm down myself I often listen to morning ragas 🙂

In the Seattle area as well, and fear for the elderly/compromised here since we have clearly seen how it spread in the one facility here, hard to deny that.
No doubt there is some herd mentality as well, I just hope they are running mostly in the right direction and adhere to some safe behaviors to benefit those that may lose their lives, and not just have clean bums.

I'm from Guangzhou, China. I just want to tell you that the virus is infectious when the infected person has no fever, cough and other symptoms. You have no choice but to stay away from anyone. In addition to buying food, please do not go out. When you really need to go out, please do a good job of protection. You must wear a mask. I wish you all good health!
IMO by far the best source for reports and education about this on the whole www., with almost daily updates since weeks.
Dr. John Campbell

Since quite a while I look up his channel every day.
What makes me worry is his increasingly wooried looks in his eyes.
Whenever this is finished the Queen should knight this good UK man and smack a "Sir" in front of his doctor title.
He has done more good that the WHO, press and his government combined.

Don’t eat animals. That’s part of the reason we have this. SARS, Covid-19 and remember BSE? Spanish flu almost certainly also came from animals.
😉
Sure, I don't mind vegan cuisine. But this is what my garden looks like right now, I planted 8 various berry bushes last summer, and two different types of apple tree, rhubarb was going great, hoping the cherry trees will give a bit more than last year. I am somewhat knowledgeable about edible wild plants and roots, but there's a limit to how much you can get throughout the summer. It is futile to plant any kind of bean in my garden, peas, potatoes and carrots work, but not much else. And I'm having some problems digesting grass and branches effectively.
If food and/or money is going to be limited, better analyze what I can do to be more self-sufficient and what's a complete waste of effort.

Seems the only thing to do everywhere is to constrain people to quarantine themselves with army/police as it's always few people that don't obey or understand by themselves... we are following the chineese method now, containment is indeed the most usefull thing to do and everyone duty.
Wisch you also good health and take cars

ICMR reports that there is no evidence of community transmission as of now. Doesn't mean it's not happening, just that it hasn't surfaced yet.
The government stepped in quickly, but tests are still limited to those with symptoms. A few tests have been negative, with individuals showing positive for H1N1 or Influenza B.
Isolation wards are being set up but the number of beds is likely insufficient to deal with any sudden spike, should it happen.
The number of infections is 137 and there have been 3 deaths, all the infections are spread by contact with individuals with travel history or such individuals themselves.
We have 1 hospital bed per 1000 population, which is not ideal to deal with a pandemic. The government is being very aggressive in information dissemination, forcing all mobile operators to switch the caller tune to an awareness message about prevention, and various states have shut down schools, colleges, cinema halls and requested people to stay home as far as possible.
I think this is scary enough that many people are heeding warnings. We cannot afford a rush on our healthcare system as in Italy, but our population is overall young, the bulk of it lies in the <50 band where the survival rate can be quite high. Fingers crossed - the next five weeks will tell us the entire story, or at least we'll know more than we do now.
There's also a lot of scary information floating about wrt cures and preventive measures, which in our country tend to be taken seriously - at a time when the only way forward seems to be a scientific approach, good hygiene and a calm mindset. This is actually worse than the virus itself.

It tells you that the Italian health system is completely overwhelmed. Hospitals can't cope with the large number of sick people, and therefore many people can't be treated. That's why the death rate in Italy is higher than elsewhere. Italy is a small country, but it is predicted to have more death cases than China.
Italy is just a few kilometers away from where I live. The Swiss government has closed schools, restaurants and stores that are not "system relevant". They are asking people to stay at home and to keep a distance from each other. I haven't left the house today, but from looking out of the window I can see that people do not stay at home. It's hard to do what you're told if you're used to live in a free world, and educated to think for yourself.
Estimates based on the Swiss death case numbers indicate we're currently at 10000+ infections, from which 2000 will end up in hospitals in two weeks. Add another week or two of exponential growth and the hospitals in Switzerland will be in the same big trouble as in Italy.
A week ago I thought this is just the usual hype in the media. It was not. It's very real. I am worried.
I fear for India because the Holi festival few days ago. India gvt say to be prudent but noone listened to cause Holi is a powerfull tradition and a happyness moment with sharing.

Yes Holi did had celebrations. But in my town it was very less. One case of covid in my town is declared. Malls and public places are mostly avoided by people. I am worried about train travelling to Mumbai/Bombay. Large population travels in that route. Govt. has declared shut down etc. People are wearing genuine or other simple cloth masks. As of now no shortage and hurried buying. I hope people here listen to simple rules. No. of famous Temples are closed to public. Doctors are saying first 2 weeks are critical to see propogation of spread. Some Delhi doctors claim to have cured disease of an italian tourist with multiple drugs therapy.
For calming music I listen to Santoor and Flute Indian Classical vinyls.
Regards.
Yes Govt. did a good job. In my hometown friend's friend who came from china in early February he among others was kept in isolation in Delhi. After few days of testing all were shifted to other hospital with most of their belongings discarded including clothes. Then they were moved to third hospital and given new clothes to travels and were let go.The government stepped in quickly, but tests are still limited to those with symptoms. A few tests have been negative, with individuals showing positive for H1N1 or Influenza B.
But when cases arises I hope people colaborate and listen. The massive scale will test any infrastructure, treatment etc.
Though W. Churchil said little bad things about India I will end with his quote in admiration.
"If you are going through hell, keep going"
Again all the best everyone.
Regards.

Thanks You very much 🙂
Yes we need protect Us more with physical distance, mask's, glowes and stay at home. Take care
My sympathies for those who lost their loved ones due to virus.

I am not against any country or people but real data and procedure would have alerted and helped other countries in preparing and management of the spread. Sooner the better would have helped as this is the procedure that countries which are noticing the spread recently are following.
All the best to everyone.

You can only know the real death rate after the infections either stabilize or decrease. Reason is that you do know the number of deaths but not the number of infected, which is higher than the numbers available now. Thus over time the death ratio drops.
