TABAQ TL for Tangband

Well, it took a long time, but the TABAQ large with the W5-1611SAF I had planned to do is slowly coming along.

One is assembled, the other one on the way.

Hopefully when it is all done, it will look like the painting scheme I came up with on my computer.

Should be nice. :)

Great perceval - looking forward to see the finished boxes and your listening impressions. I see you mounted the drivers on the inside of the baffle. I am contemplating doing the same with my 4FE32 drivers which should land soon. Did you make a rebate at the back for the drivers? I assume your are using something like 15mm thick plywood here.

perceval,

Nice color scheme you got there - should look pretty striking once it's done.

These are for yourself or someone else?

Btw, your stone-faced cabinets were really nice too.

Thanks.

They are for myself, but I have of number of friends who I know will be interested in them.

The stone TABAQs, I have lent to another buddy, and he doesn't want to give them back! Ha ha.

So, after a while, I will try to convince him to swap with the large version...
So, this large version might be a bribe to get my friend to let go of the stone ones!

:D

Actually, the baffle is two layers. So, drivers mounted on the face of the baffle, and another 7mm layer glued on top to rebate the driver flush to the baffle.

wowwww look very futuristic color scheme, are you going to varnish yourself the Tabaq? If yes how can you get that color effect? .....ciao grazie

I ma in no way talented enough to come up with such a thing! :D

I have a buddy here (Keith, cool guy, makes amazing bicycles, and is also a master with an airbrush) who will be finishing them for me.

So, airbrushing the paint scheme, and varnish (probably epoxy).

Shameless plug, as I also have one of his bikes... check out his website:

Hi there,

Just wondering what’s the dimensions of the port of your TABAQ large?

Thanks! Will do!

First I'll finish the boxes and see if they need a BSC or a notch, then, when I am happy with them, they will go to my friend to get them painted.

Keith bicycles are quite big in the Philippines... ever seen one there?

Hi there,

Just wondering what’s the dimensions of the port of your TABAQ large?

B

I tweaked the dimensions of the line and port a little after measuring my drivers (after break in), which numbers were a little off from the company's specs.

My port is the same 3.1cm, but I set it at 9cm long for my drivers.

Hmmm... did some measurements.
(drivers were broken in a while back with 200+ hours)

I feel a little let down by the W5-1611saf in this case.
I have read it was a good driver with a good reach... for a 5-incher.

But I'm not sure I can live with its limitations.

It doesn't reach lower than my 4" drivers, and it starts beaming much earlier than my other TABAQs. If on-axis, the reach is fine and will need a BSC.

But just a little off axis and it starts dropping at 2.5kHz... which the BSC will just make worse. And if I just run without a BSC, than the 800Hz-5kHz range will be prominent, and I hate that kind of sound, where the mids overpower everything else.

Plus, listening as is, I can kinda "hear" the plastic cone... which is strange because I do like my polypropylene coned W4-1052SD... but the W5 is totally different.

So, I might transfer the W5 to a simple ported box for near field listening (computer speakers) and somehow make the Large enclosure fit the SB 5x8" woofers... that will take some creative work, I'm sure!

Then, I would just need to tweak the vent and add the SB65 for high range. I think it would work much better.

Here's the W5 off axis, 15 deg:

But that is typical fullrange off axis frequency for fullrange I think?
Especially small fullrange, my W8-2145 is pretty good of axis.
And now 2020 I dont run any speaker without EQ.
Either EQ APO or DCR with Brutefir with Raspberry all of them free of cost.
But I only run my music from computer or Raspberry but minidsp are good also for dedicated amp.

So that's what I was thinking 3-4" driver are the winners in the Tabaq while the 5" struggle a bit, thiele-small parameters, sim etc. help to find a possible right candidate but then the most sophisticated device our ears are the one count

Have you listen W5-2143?
I have successes with W4-1320sif bamboo cone so
I am curious about W5-2143 MLTL.

Question for Solve Post 2463

What type of enclosure are you using for your Tang Band W8-2145?

I am intrigued by the W8-2145 and am interested in enclosures people may have used for it, particularly TLs.

There are lots of Sealed and Base Reflex ones out there. But regarding TLs, I have only seen the Betsy K TABAQ on this site modeled by Bjorn, which I believe has been used for the W8-2145, and a slightly tapered and folded MLTL on the Parts Express comments.

Hi tamra,

I build Tabaq with W5-2143, very nice driver but on-axis only, beaming problem is very noticeable so as you can see I solved the problem adding a tweeter on the top, now beaming problem is solved.....all the best
