Speaker box designers started to move away from the four-square design box into tear-drop shaped enclosures claiming that this was the best design since no walls were parallel to each other. Questions:
1) is there a name for this shape (other than tear-drop)?
2) Sony produced a few models of speakers in this shape in various sizes. Do you know of any other speaker manufacturer who also made/make this shape of speaker enclosure?

Yes, thanks. I was wondering more about if there were commercial manufacturers like Sony who used this design for their boxes. There name of the shape is lachrymiform, though I don't expect people to know that name or use it to describe their speakers.

I don't understand your question where you knew the answer anyway , if you study airwaves inside of rectangular box you'd understand why people try to avoid a regular box shape . Yet speakers have sub compartments within and bracing which changes the game for commercial speakers .
I think that's why there are very few Vivid Guyer type speakers , also there was post somewhere where the cleaner bumped the speaker and it smashed like an egg. There went about half of a $15000 pair of speakers in an instant .

Thanks for your reply. I have studied a bit about optimal shapes of cabinets and I have experimented with things other than boxes, so yes, I do know something of the answer to one part of my question.
Since you mentioned the Vivid: their cost of production must be extreme by comparison to commercial box speakers and they reflect that back into their retail price.
But there are other brands who don't go that far. The other part of my question was about commercial manufacturers like Sony (and Paradigm Signature), and if there were any others.

Why do Egg speakers sound so good? Because they do not scramble the sound, and that's no yoke.... (rim shot)

The Focal Egg Speakers were probably the first high volume, high quality construction products, offered in both diy Kits and a complete Focal product.

Research at B&W favored a sphere with a rear stuffed tapered tube because it produced the smoothest SPL from minimum effects on the speaker rear pressure wave.
