Check the Sanyo SFP 101N. These things can be had for about $5.00 on eBay, and CEC uses the laser pickup for their transports.

I've got the original type of laser unit from a JVC player which has the whole PCB stuck to the motors underside. The ones on Ebay are a type that have a small PCB between the motors. I suspect these ebay versions cant' be used with the old JVC boombox version? 😕 Or maybe using just the laser head?
