What is this dampening called?

Holy ****, where did shiirrn come from? I like him already. Wish I had more time for this sort of banter, but I must get my dose of Vitamin D while the great globe is still shining upon us, and make sure my doggie is happy too.

Earlier this year, when Justin was in trouble and I came by the gift shop in Byward Market that guy Moe runs who my wife has been to school with I bought a pair of Trudeau socks thinking they might soon dissapear and turn into valuable collectors' items.

I wonder if jute would be as good as felt?

Cal - we may be talking about the same thing.

The picture in the original post is what I've always known as an automotive interior product called jute, dealing with upholstery shops. It's used under auto carpet for padding and acoustic control. I cursed it every time I mounted an amplifier or phone transceiver under a seat- it doesn't cut with a razor knife, and it disagrees vehemently with screw threads.

The OP is in the US, so that was my search suggestion. It may be known as felt or something else in other geographies or arenas.

It's a little heavier than you'd think and, anecdotally IHMO, is good for attenuating mid-high frequencies. It's found just as in the picture, or with a foil backing for heat barrier, or with a thick asphalt-type backing for better attenuation.

My favorite version was from 70's-80's GM luxury land-yachts using two layers of jute with asphalt in between. That stuff was heavy and impossible to work with, but effective. I've searched for it in recent years to no avail. I think it would make a great limp membrane, being heavy, flexible, fairly thick and fuzzy.

I know that in pianos felt is used. It's natural woolen felt
You can find it in sheets and is very pricey.
It's the only one useful for stopping the propagation of sound.
Naturally, a sheet doesn't work like it is, but it has to be cut in forms such as triangles to "break the wave" ( see also how anechoic chambers work)

What tsmith said. Used in automotive, carpet underlayment. Not quite what felt is.
Sorry guys, things are getting mixed things up here.

Jute is made from a specific plant and is what burlap is made from. What you see in the first pic is generic felt. It may contain some jute but is usually made from a combination of textiles, wool and other materials. It is not correctly referred to as jute. Only Jute is Jute.

I second the carpet underlay. That's exactly what it looks like. Hard to find in the tropical climes I inhabit - here we use foam. But the wool blends should be easier up north. UltraTouch will be as good. 100% wool felt is best, but $$$$

polyester pillow stuffing will only offer damping to frequencies in the kilohertz range unless incredably stuffed /compressed and even then it's still doubtful that it's of use....makes me wonder why so many sub's are stuffed with it...teased long fiber wool is the most effective stuff for mid frequency damping.

still hard to find at a resonable prices north of the forty ninth parrallel.

Cal,
Felt can be made out of jute, wool, cotton, hemp, polyester, and a myriad other materials.
Exactly what I said one post up.
Actually it is referred to as "jute".
If you are speaking of the post above yours, I've never heard anyone refer to that as jute, that's felt. Since this ties in with my work, I guess I tend to be pickier about my terms. I wasn't aware of a blanket 'jute' that included textiles.
Anyways, water under the felt, I mean jute, damn, I mean bridge, water under the bridge! :)

Its cool, Cal. Just do a quick search on automotive carpet underlayment. I never called it that, to me it's just carpet underlayment or insulation.
If it's that hard to find, a lot of people are really liking the denim product. Personally, I'm a Roxul fan. Crappy to work with, but sonically great.
