The Well Tempered Master Clock - Building a low phase noise/jitter crystal oscillator

Bedankt/thanks!

I have 2 fifopi's from Ian Canada and plan to build two clock sets. I have 2 AT cut crystals and two SC cut crystals, also a bunch of pcb's from Andrea completely with the dil, oven pcb's and daughter board.

What is de recommended pcb to build for these crystals on the fifopi?

regards,

@Supersurfer
Your crystals are all SC-Cut, so you could start building 2 Driscoll oscillator boards (TWTMC-D) with 45/49 MHz crystals and its oven board (TWTMC-OVN)

@Canvas, @Supersurfer, all the members who got HC-47/U package crystals
If you have not planned to build your own oscillator you should wait until the new Driscoll board will be available. The new board will be suitable for both crystal packages (HC-43/U and HC-47/U) and frequency from 5MHz up to 24MHz.

New Discroll board

Hi Andrea,

Do you plan to keep one standalone board per frequency and the compatibility with Iancanada clock board and/or FifoPi ?(humm not the same pins layout for dual clock II/MC Clock and FifoPi !)

I have now the standalone frequency Discroll board and my bet is that's ok to stack one only on the FifoPi (not two due to the new layout of the FifoPi) and I also surmise some here plan to use yoyur board for one of the iancanada boards ?

Will your new Discroll board be a dual frequency one (both crystals on the same pcb) so not stackable with iancanada gears but with uf-l wires of course ?

Edit: have you planned smd acrylic cap (tests) when needing 1uF or more on your board instead smd ceramic X7R ? (acrylics smd caps needs 0805 casing spacing or more).

Hi Andrea,

You are right, I changed my order for AT to SC-cut for all crystals. I will order the materials for the driscoll boards and wait for your new board for the big ones. Will you also provide an oven board for these?

Regards,

diyiggy if it helps you that's how I integrated the driscoll boards on the XO of Ian,for the time being because of a lack of space the other is connected with a coaxial cable

Andrea you think that I can unsolder my crystal to place it on the new Driscoll boards,or that is risk?

The new Driscoll board will be single oscillator with sine wave output suitable to drive 50 ohm coaxial cable.
There will be a specific oven if needed, I will measure the phase noise with and without the oven to understand if it affects the performance of the oscillator.

There will be a dedicated squarer board suitable for Ian's stuff, picture attached (Dual XO, MC Dual XO and FifoPi).

All SC-Cut crystals from 5MHz up to 24 MHz will work with the new Driscoll board, so one can easily remove the crystal from the old board to use it with the new oscillator.

Now it's time for vacation, I will be away about 3 weeks, then I will resume the development of the new boards.
