Hi Guys,
I am looking to try some replacement type tubes in my Rogue Magnum 99 pre amp. In the past I have used alot of different 6SN7's then I tried and liked the 6F8G tubes, and now I have been using the 6J5GT tubes for awhile and I llike them too.
Just wanted to know if there were any others that would work and be linear?

The 6SN7 superseded the 6F8G are are similar.
You are asking about "linear", that is mostly down to your circuit design.
A 6SL7 has slightly more gain.
You could make a B9A to I.O. adapter and fit an ECC83/12AX7 if you wanted.

Aren't some tube more linear than others in the octal family?
Yes, but tubes quality varies greatly.
Depending on the requirements, if the tube is a 'cathode' output, quality doesn't matter at all...
if it is in a gain position with only one side, quality is paramount, especially the lower the feedback level of the device.
if it is used with both sections and they need to be matched for gain, well you need a perfect matched section, low thd tube... hard to find in new tubes...
Unless you perform a THD test with each different 6SN7, you will never know if you are improving or lowering the quality of the rogue magnum. So I would stick anything there, good if you can hear an improvement, try NOS...

Negative feedback sometimes "hides" most of the measured differences;
except for bad tubes, very badly matched tubes, or tubes that are in circuits that are not well designed.

I was looking at the 2C22 as a possible tube to try, what to you think?
The 2C22 is a single triode. Totally different tube.
It has significantly more gain, and grossly different operating points. In that preamp it will not last very long either.A 6SL7 has slightly more gain.

It might not even work at all.

I know the 2C22 is a single triode I am using the 6J5GT's now with adapters, they are single triodes as well.
They are the same tube, just with the leas brought out for the anode and grid to top caps on the 2C22 for decreased inductance for radar and RF. They are identical otherwise.

So that would mean that they probably sound the same?
Hi,
7N7 with adapter...
Best wishes,
Frank
Hi Frank, how does the 7N7 sound compared to the two other tubes above?
They are often the same construction as early 6SN7, and usually very good quality in my experience- to add my opinion in there. If you can find them cheap they are a good buy 🙂
