Thinking of trying these as a mid in a 3 way, say 500Hz-4K?? Opinions?:

The main reason I'm considering these is price,
alternatives are Dayton RS100P & SB 12MNRX25 or 15MFC30
cheers,

Don't dismiss the Dayton PS95. I'll endorse it. Nice little full range driver. I've used it as a FAST/WAW full range and as a midrange between 2-300Hz and 4-5Kz. They are a bargain. They're also sexy as h*ll.
What are the partners, tweeter and woofer?
On the PS95-8 is an anomaly from 1,5-2,5kHz with the resonance on 2k which is potentially difficult to handle. Both SB drivers got resonances at ~6k, which is pretty close to the target xo of 4k. The Dayton PC105-4 is the easiest to handle (if a poly membrane is okay for you).
The The 15MFC30 should probably play a bit lower than 4k.
I'd prefer the SB12MNRX25 or Dayton RS100P-8 which looks quite tame and easy to handle as well, I like the paper cones far more than the poly.

I've already got the PS95, WAW with a 5" Wavecor, xover still needs some tweaking. Agree about the looks. Think I'm looking for something a bit more efficient.
Parters are SEAS CA18RLY & 22TFF. This was in a 2.5 way I was very happy with until my last build based on a Beyma MC115 dome, which has me in raptures. Should have mentioned, I'm also considering the Dayton RS52 dome....

I used the PC105-4 in a soundbar with the AN25Ti-4 called 'Bar-Gain', xover about 2.8k, IIRC. Both of these will keep your sensitivity up, but I might recommend the textile version over the Ti.
The response is pretty good down to about 80Hz or so if you use the proper sealed or MAPD box.

Agree about the efficiency. I was bi-amping with a MiniDSP so that really wasn't an issue. If you're looking at the RS52, check out the relatively new RS52FN. I like the top end response much better than the RS52AN. No nasty metal dome breakup.
Now, if you want to step outside the norm, here's what I settled on as a wide band driver for my O.B.'s: SB Acoustics SB20PFC30-4. It's unfortunately shaped but it sounds fantastic and the efficiency is there. Might be larger than you are looking for but you can literally run this without a filter on the top end. I am using these with a pair of Peerless SLS 12's and a Beston dipole magnetic planar per side. I've got a cap and coil on the tweeter and the aforementioned MiniDSP on the woofers and mids. The SB's roll off at 5.6Khz 3rd Butterworth without a crossover. That's it. There's nothing else to do. Just let 'em play. I know I'm breaking some rules with this setup but I've tried a bunch of X/overs and throwing complexity at them didn't net me anything. These SB drivers should be on everyone's 2-way 8 inch bucket list.
