Then there was the time I had a project in Manhattan at the Museum of Modern Art. I had just finished sorting out the problems and was really smiling as I walked to lunch. After a bit, coming towards me was a stunningly pretty brunette wearing a tie died tee shirt with a purse strap over her left shoulder and the purse on her right side. Beautifully symmetric across her chest. Every hair in place and perfect make up. As we passed she caught my smile and returned it. I can honestly say in person she was prettier than any picture of her. Natalie Portman!

Funny how makeup of the era makes all the women of said era look the same. Plastic people love one another
It only took about 3 seconds to recognize Helm from Metropolis. You are certainly correct in the similarity of features -- Mary Pickford, Dorothy or Lillian Gish etc.
Note that early movie films were orthochromatic, so the actors and actresses were heavily "made-up" to compensate for the poor translation of tonalities into black and white and everything in between.

bingo. it had to do with the film, and when they started doing live television they had problems with peoples faces being illuminated sufficiently enough while broadcasting live television because of the early poor quality of the video camera tubes, specifically the iconoscope. Even long into the days of color and the image orthicon people had to bake under super hot stage lamps in order for the picture to be sufficiently bright enough because the lenses weren't very efficient at transferring light to the tube, the image orthicon had improved sensitivity by that time but the lenses were still inefficient. This is also partly why you see huge cameras on stages in early live television broadcasting studios, with massive lenses, and a huge array of overhead lighting.

They still use very bright studio lights even today, you need a very bright light source to keep shadows off of the news achors jacket (from their arms, hair, head) and to provide a professional looking stage display, and wearing black only makes things worse for a camera.: YouTube
