a micro project that measures very compactly yet sounds good, appears like you need to talk to wolf_teeth member. I have read somewhere him taking interest in such projects, either here on PETT forum.
The first idea that crosses my mind is a Peerless PPB either 4" or 5.25" unit class, and a small flange dome tweeter. Another interesting unit a Peerless SLS-85S25CP04-04.

I looked at the SB Micro, looks good but I was hoping to stay in the 8" tall max range. It is on sale at Madisound now btw.

I've played around with micro speakers for the last year.
SB65WBAC25-4 works very well for nearfield desk use or in a small room. 1.36 litres, Fb=79Hz, F3=65Hz. Surprising driver that works better than it should. I've also tried it with a SB12PAC-00 passive radiator (half the spider removed to tune the bottom end). I'm sure the guys in the fullrange forum would have plenty of suggestions with Mark Audio drivers etc.
I did a speaker using NE19VTS-04 + SB12PAC25-4 and ended up a nice combination which can surprise in it's sonics. 2.6 litres, Fb=78Hz, F3=72Hz. Better than any of the fullrange speakers I tried. Thoughts on the SB Acoustic SB12PAC25 and ideal tweeter and box?
Troels did a TV speaker using the SB12PAC25-4 and could be modded to suit and different tweeters could be used. Had some nice comments on the SB12PAC performance. myTV
There's the SB12PFC25-4-COAX which could be a possibility but I've never used it. SB Acoustics has a suggested crossover for this driver.

Not really sure I have any designs to offer up that would apply to your needs here. Most of my smaller/miniscule designs are equipped with NLA drive units. My beloved "PC" (perfectly compact) uses the Aura NS3-193-8A in an internal 4" cube.

I did something of that form-factor a little while ago.
1x Fostex FE126E (with P10 mods)
2x 4" passive radiators
Tuned around 50Hz, and EQ'd the result.
Sounded decent, although a 10dB peak at 45Hz (room-related) helped out.
Edit - this design relied entirely on the Fostex FE's range being very benign when operated in overloaded conditions. Their Xmax is miniscule (usually a fraction of a mm), but they exceed Xmax with grace, allowing kick drums to be reproduced reasonably well. I found the limit on output was actually down to air leaks around the phase plugs that mine have fitted. Other drivers could be substituted, of course, but these drivers are unique in their overload characteristics IME.

The best sounding small speakers I have heard are the Realistic Minimus 25s .
The 5 inch wide band driver in them sounds really special.
They are also easy to drive compared to most small speakers.
I have a pair in which I replaced the cone tweeter with a Celestion T 3399 tweeter [like a HF2000 but 8 ohm] and 1.5 mF cap in series and put them in a slightly larger box and they sound superb.I have owned some very good small speakers including Proac Tablettes,LS3/5a and Sonus Faber Cromona Auditors but prefer the realistic based ones.Not a lot of bass but the midrange is superb.

This looks interesting for really small bassreflex speaker. Any nice tweeter suggestions? Something small with some wavequide (possibly routed) to remove baffle diffractions.
