Hi Guys,

I am in the midst of building a tonearm. Where can I source the fine wire I will need to hook up the cartridge to the phono sockets. I live in Australia. Thanks

There is a large variety of Litz on eBay...you need to decide how many strands and the gauge you feel is appropriate. This is what I bought...

LITZ WIRE 10/44 250 ft | eBay

It’s 10 strand 44 gauge enameled copper wire in a twisted cotton sheath. I recently needed to repair a Stax tonearm at the bearing assembly where they used .06mm enameled copper wire to transfer the signal wiring from the arm through the bearing assembly with as little resistance as possible. This came in handy as I was able to cut a section and disassemble it to use single strands of the litz to repair the arm. I measured the 44 gauge strands as .05mm with my digital caliper.

Another question I have is that do I buy the four coloured cables to fit over the cartridge prongs and then solder the fine wires to them?

Hello Ben,

I would not do that. I would run uninterrupted wires from the cartridge pins to the mounting base of your tone arm and continue from there with an RCA interconnect.
Try to get your wires from KAB in New Jersey, USA. Search for them on the internet. If you can't find them, contact me. I am not near my papers right now.

Sincerely,

Ralf
