Using an alternative material, such as paper? I'm saying that, as I noticed a company using a paper ribbon (as an option to it's alu ribbon)

there are many that made one. i did a few as well, but the kings of amt are Bandsei and Solhaga look for post from them and of you go
i tried paper by the way.. its rather hard since when etching it usually lets go 🙂. except with one particular art hobby mateiral i had some succes also the MOST simple amt. with paper alu laminate. the foil is really thin. but when you use the etch technique you leave the fold lines and you can just fold the thing with your hands no rig required , downside is i never reached lower then 800hz resonance. so you wont have the nice folds as seen in most amts but more rectangular ones, like an accordion.
