Help me get my wife off my back

Ok so recently I inherited some cabinets for the Fostex 206 driver. I bought a new set of the drivers with the eNable treatment and we are off to the races. Then I bought an elekit TU8600 that I’m very excited about building.

EDITED: Next were the Dallas II cabinets. Only now my wife is complaining the speakers are too big. Can anyone recommend a solution where I can slim down the profile without severely impacting sound? I can still get away with a tower setup if it’s just less bulky.

Will smaller full range drivers give me the same bass extension?

Does she accept a explannation on bigger speakers means better sound quality?
Maybe have a good chat with her about the speakers.

EDIT: If I was to hear anyone complaning about a 8inch taking up space I'd tell them get lost.
8inch is like nothing compared to the space a 15inch speaker takes up (which I do own a pair off).
I also do have two pairs of 8inch speakers at home too.
I think it is very reasonable to have a proper high end 8inch speaker setup while ignoreing storage space.

Since I gather it's rarely a good policy to tell your spouse to get lost, a slightly more practical solution seems called for.

If you don't want one of the Karlson BP variations, you're a little more limited: the 206 is a low Q driver specifically designed for use with high output impedance amplifiers (so you'll be fine with your new kit) and preferably in back horns. They want a relatively large cabinet to give of their best & produce reasonable LF output.

The question is -what's the main objection. Outright enclosure size? Shape? Height? Width? Appearance of a horn? These latter can be addressed with alternative cabinets (within reason) and careful choice of finish -with the latter preferably being by her, so she's involved & likes the aesthetic. I would look at that first before considering alternate drivers, although there are decent options available that want smaller boxes if necessary.

Freddi's suggestion is good. That XKi is a pretty compact box for the FE206 - and easy to build too. I have not made one with it - all simulations at this point, but the XKi made for other drivers have worked out well. Most notably, the W5-2143 which normally would have been a pretty big box, ended up compact but with nice bass extension and great dynamics.

It’s really the outright size. I think it’s MAINLY depth though. The XKi option is worth a try but I’d really like to know how big of a change it would be to the Dallas. I like the floor standers, but I see her point. We live in an area where houses are expensive. And small. Our only living area is wide open and large. But it’s the ONLY living space and she wants it to look great. I think if I could find something all around skinnier she would be happier but a wider design with less depth could also work. To give you an idea, I showed her the Salk Sont Tower and she said she liked them. If that would solve it. I’d buy them. But I love full range and the Salks aren’t sensitive enough.

Is the sketch in the thread the correct design? I noticed it was for the 206e which I thought was the older driver. Has anyone tried it that I can talk to? Because it’s relatively short would I or could I wall mount them?

I've found a little bit of give and take is in order. "If you allow me to do this WITH NO FUSS, I'll give you that" type of discussion. My wife seriously bitched about my setup for awhile, especially in the "prototyp" stage where nothing was painted. After the were painted: I'll quote her: " Oh well, I guess I have to get used to them". And we're talking about visuals here. She doesn't give a crap about how they sound! So, in the end, alle is gut, I got my speakers to blast when she isn't here, and she is getting hardwood floors. Sigh.
This hobby is not for the faint of heart, sadly.

Best of luck! Cheers.

Sorry. I just realized the sketch shown was for another driver. So if the difference is a slightly deeper and taller box, how does that impact the internal measurements? So the joint of the angle near the top of the box should be 4 inches instead of 3.6. Does that mean the entire thing shifts backwards and te 1.5 inches at the top moves backward accordingly? It would also change the angle or tilt of the driver no? I’m not an engineer and very new to this. Just trying to figure out what the box dimensions would be. I’m also not sure how I would judge the size and curve of the aperture.

Do you want to save the enclosures?
You could use the 206 in an OB like this (found via Google, there are more examples).
Depending on your interior, a painted (or perspex ) baffle could virtually disappear in the room.

hardwood flors are nice! you get to enjoy both and only her mind is holding her back from enjoying both as well. make sure you play the music she likes a lot when she's in and sit and listen as if it were yours, she comes to join you and at last sits down to listen properly.... and discovers she enjoys good sound too.

Got two usable corners? Go vertical with 'built-in' triangular shaped corner cabs can make for impressive size [BIB] or other expansion BLHs without impinging on the living area.

Women are comfortable with corner nick-knack, china, etc., cabs, so suggest whatever 'face'/baffle width is most common and if full ceiling height [at least in looks, I made one piece full height removable grills] makes them appear as part of the room design.
