Yeah. That is significant. Just imagine a magnet on a turntable.
The turntable has to work against the magnetic field of the earth
for each half turn and then must brake against the field on the other
half of the turn. The resulting speed modulation directly results in
phase modulation of the recovered audio signal. That is the worst
thing that could ever happen.
So there is a magnetic dipole on the vinyl record, not even a bunch of small magnetic domains, as small magnetic domains would average out, but a single giant magnetic domain.
Seriously, think about what you post before you hit "submit reply".
Sine waves are not music you don't mind if I stop there, I'm sure the other side does likewise.
Yes.
Dan.
Yes what? I ment carts that don't use magnetics in their operation at all like a strain gage or electrostatic element.
I work on very critical systems, you don't make any change
without it being thoroughly tested in a lab environment first.
.
Well said.
I'm suprised MH even suggested the idea.
EDIT: *** comparing with the CD original, even when I don't have listened to CD various days, and resulted correct. Most walkmans have poor speed compensation.
Even CD doesn't play at the correct speed. The analog nature of the pits on the CD surface will cause problems in the digital audio stream that is produced.
The stamping process is changed aswell from one manufacture to another.

It isn't that variations in CD pits will cause problems, it's that they could potentially cause problems in some cases. For CDs kept in good condition unrecoverable errors are pretty infrequent these days.
Also, the speed CDs play is primarily determined by the frequency of the oscillator that steps the playback DAC through the audio samples.
In addition, jitter due to variation in CD pits is normally not a problem any more, since the digital data is typically buffered and reclocked to remove any jitter of than nature. Also, such jitter can be removed completely by ripping a CD to a computer disk and playing it back from there.
The other source of timing jitter that is sometimes still considered an issue and that might make it to your ears has to do with very short term variation of DAC oscillator frequency, often at nanosecond scale or less.
The latter type of jitter is much less of an issue now than it was many years ago with CDs first came out, at least for higher quality CD players.

I'd say you missed my point...
Not missed at all. Perhaps you missed my point.Interesting ideas here recently. So what's the bottom line for snake oil products and this thread? I tend to be a skeptic about most tweaks but in the end, if someone hears, or claims to hear, improvements in their systems - snake oil or not - should we really care? Placebo effect is sometimes real, meaning that when people are given sugar pills instead of real medicine, they sometimes get better. If their health improves simply because they believe in the cure, who are we to argue? If someone has a happier time listening to music in their system, and that improvement is worth the cost of the snake oil TO THEM, what right do I have to try to change their minds? Meanwhile, maybe on occasion there really IS something at play that the usual analyses fail to uncover? (no comment on Bybee products in particular)
The value of this thread to me is in the fascinating/absurd product ideas people come up with and their efforts to sell them. As a skeptic I am frequently amused. But personal attacks on people who are believers just seems silly to me. Let's get on with finding new products to gawk at.
12) Used by NASA.Updated from contributions. Now with added pith!
Typical characteristics of snake oil products...
1) Huge price mark-up, like price 100x material cost
2) Hijacking of a topical scientific principle, but the claims contain scientific blunders and lack of understanding of those principles and science in general.
3) No credible, controlled trial to show efficacy.
4) One person company, absence of credentials or exaggerated/fake credentials.
5) Strip-down of product reveals ordinary components that have been obscured.
6) Glowing testimonials from ' professionals ' with prefixes such as Dr or Professor added to their names , upon closer inspection it turns out that the Dr is a hypnotist and the Professor a school janitor.
7) Advertising on and being revieved by 6moons. (and other sites)
8) "Quantum" in their product name
9) Claiming "years of research".
10) Claiming Military sales (eg: secrecy and gravitas)
11) Patented or proprietary (more secrecy)
add more...
Nezbleu, I completely agree with you - I strongly dislike those who rip off people, and sell stuff that doesn't do a thing for money. To me, Bybees do not fall into this category, I have heard their effects just too many times to ignore and think of them as snake oil. Actually, I am quite shocked that people have such a vastly different experience elsewhere. The only reasonable explanation is that all the Bybees we heard were installed by the same person, who unfortunately passed away recently. Apparently he knew very well what he was doing, or he got different units than the rest of the world got??
You have misunderstood me. I don't dislike or even care about people who "rip off people", but I understand when I am being lied to and I stop listening. Everything on the Bybee website sounds like a lie, so I am not interested in the products.
Janos, have you tried measuring stray magnetic field from cartridges....this may explain requirement to demag the record after each play.....ie the cartridge setting a magnetic signature into the vinyl.
Another experiment would be to play a record with A cartridge, mute the speakers and play with B cartridge, unmute and play again with A cartridge and see if there is a signature imparted by the cartridge into the vinyl.
I find that ferrite speaker magnets have a signature, and morover this signature can be changed by application of my filter mixture to the magnet/pole piece assy.
Phono cartridges can similarly be changed and for the better.
Dan.
Dan, that's an interesting experiment you are suggesting with cart A and B. I intend to set up two arms with one of my tables, will test it - with both LOMC and MM cartridges, which should have very different levels of radiated signal-modulated magnetic fields.
Have not measured radiated magnetic fields - I do not have any sensitive gear to do that. However, we can expect that high output cartridges have higher radiated fields (due to high turns), while LOMC carts have much lower radiated fields (just a few turns of coils). Also, internal structure makes for quite a bit of difference, such as mu-metal shielding. That's a great suggestion to investigate how that would change the effect.
While we cannot measure any dipole-magnetic features from vinyl with our current technology, it just means that its molecules do not form noticeable dipole domains when subjected to magnetic forces. However, magnetism could affect vinyl in a different way. I don't dare to think that every aspect of electromagnetism has already been discovered yet.
Vinyl is clearly subject to static charging, hence, to electromagnetic phenomena. As the cartridge passes over the grooves, its radiated signal modulated magnetic field could build up a weak static charge in the grooves.
Janos, at least you have tried to make sense here. Jack is still an OK guy, who tries his best to make useful stuff. It IS awfully expensive and certainly should not be a first purchase with someone on a budget, but added to a really good sound system, can really make it better.
I have known Jack for more than 25 years now, and while I have raised an eyebrow a few times, I have heard the results, both positive and negative that often happen when adding his stuff. I really do wish that I could explain why Bybee technology works, especially the QM stuff, but I can't, and I don't expect to understand that much more about them in future. Still, I use what works, rather than ignoring it, just because I do not completely understand it.

Evidently I did and still do. Hmmm.

This thread is like a busy pub night, with two groups of punters simultaneously singing two different songs, over and over and over, each one mostly oblivious to the other save for the occasional beer bottle lobbed half-heartedly across the room. I think I need to go home and sober up for a few days.

13. Comes with supporting white papers, 'explaining' how it works.
A couple of links earlier providing a blogg which states "why objectivists are wrong" lead me to his products and webstore.
