No more combustion cars in UK from 2040?

Didn't you think about the part of the world you are destroying, for your sons/daughters, or grandchildren?
Absolutely not! 😀 They will be having thrill rides with their crazy grandfather in his Mustang, which will be one of the few gasoline-powered vehicles left on the road, and hence making a negligible difference to the planet/climate.

Meanwhile, as power grid capacity increases to support the myriad of electric vehicles, the increase in water vapour and heat from power stations will cause even more global warming than there was before!

BTW, here's a fascinating article I just read today, related to the topic of this thread - https://shift.newco.co/this-is-how-big-oil-will-die-38b843bd4fe0

Trucks, buses, and trains will be the 1st to go to fuel cells. Batteries don’t make sense with large vehicles.

dave

There's quite a lot of battery buses around, quite a lot at airports. Some hydrogen powered ones too, a big project in Aberdeen uses hydrogen fuel cells, refuelling stations with hydrogen at 500bar I think. The hydrogen is produced at the refuelling sites by electrolysis.

Thorium - cheaper, abundant, safer/cleaner (no meltdown, short half-life). One of the reasons for not being widely used is because it's very hard to make a weapon out if it.
OK, it's not ideal, but beats the heck out of what we got now...

Yep Thorium is safe and I guess you know that Uranium is better suited for corruption, power and big money.
As french I'm under a heavy propaganda for Nuclear power plant. Mind that few miles away I have 2 plant cores that are said safe for 37 years of life expectancy, 35 is gone. After the risk is that it fails the same as Fukishima (again, impossible with the cheap and everywhere thorium) Always the same story, cars included, power and money.
As in France they state the same, no more combustion engines sold in 2040, it's all politics and show off! You all talked of it, moving the pollution production higher in the power production chain does eliminate pollution. You said it, hydrogen has things to say, mind the great results in a Wankel engine. (Yes rotary head here 😉 )And yes the grid is not ready, no way to charge for most people, only for the lucky healthier ones with private house, a few percentage of the people.
No what makes me mad, the social point. No opinions, just facts.
I am already forbidden in Paris with my car. Soon all big cities (with legal status of "metropole" where the jobs are) will follow as mine. I will not be allowed to go home in my own town!
I will have 2 choices: leave downtown for poorer suburbs and never again in my birth city, or stop having a car. It is already the case, official numbers are online, lower classes ar poorer, higher ones richer. More Porsches and Ferrari downtown. Less people like me. With less local trains they will explain us how people go to work.
Years prior to 2040 may see political evolutions, riots or worse, if the powerful ones don't open their eyes and go on with such stupid sayings like 2040 you bow and buy electric.
Like many of you I am fond of cars, and I may be a pedestrian soon. When passion changes in hate of the system...

Nb: I take as true that everywhere in the world it's like here, 50% of people earn less than 1500€ to eat, raise kids and have a roof and a cheap BMW i3 is 38.000€ and a Tesla...

Wankel is forgotten, even Mazda gave up on it, although I think that it still has something to say (providing better materials). But there is a new star, a Libralato engine (upgraded Atkinson), that can improve the situation (given further development funding).
Hydrogen is universal fuel of the universe but we lack some fundamental knowledge in order to use it properly, but where is the will, there is a way...
As for pedestrianism, my back, knees and watch are against it - I ride a bicycle 365 days a year, no matter the weather, and it makes me feel good in every possible way (ok, it's only 5 km from my home to the place where I work, but still) 🙂

Hahaha, that's the way I used to feel too. Road rage against slower species is inevitable but there is a way around it - you look, anticipate and don't slip into the role of a victim, be visible and ignore the curses ... 😀
