I have an 80s Hitachi TRK3d80 Boombox and i am looking for a suitable set of upgrade replacement speakers. The boombox has limited space and i would like to increase the bass response beyond what it is currently.
The amplifier section is 2x3W outer 2 12cm speakers and 2x4W for the inner 16CM subwoofers. The existing speakers are 4 ohm.
Any help and guidance would be appreciated. thanks

Sorry but you can´t beat Physics Laws.
Any speaker which gives you significantly deeper sound will pay a big sensitivity/efficiency penalty .... and you have very low power available to drive it.
Currently you have a system which can give you decent volume in , say, a bedroom; replace speakers with "better" ones but way less efficient ... what will you get?
Plus you don´t have real speaker cabinets, just a leaky flaky thin walled small plastic case.
If anything, connect its line out to some amplifier, even a 2 x 15W one will be a huge improvement, and a couple real cabinets.

Or make a subwoofer box of the same size , but acoustically inert.
That would be an improvement.
Or find some double-coil speaker like 4+4Ω for Car and make a box for it

its not my main Hifi or anything, i just wanted to see if i could get a bit more quality from it. I already have a high end hifi to use as an alternative. Im really just wondering if modern speakers would make much difference to the quality of the sound. Things have moved on since 1989. Its being used as a retro iPod dock with bluetooth streaming etc.
I also have a Sharp GF555 boombox and it sounds good for its age but I've heard that the Hitachi 3d80 Bass drivers are a good upgrade replacement to add bass to the Sharp. I just wondered what a good upgrade for the Hitachi is. Car audio speakers?? Take a pair of drive units from a Centre speaker? just looking for suggestions that may be suitable.

You "cannot extract blood from beetroots" or so they say...
Or
You can power them with 6 or 7 or 8 Li-Po Cells and associated circuitry to "squeeze some juice"

It will Be powered from the mains at home, very unlikely it will be used further afield
It's the same, if it's portable ...😱🙄
The rated power talks for itself
So what’s changed over the years? Have amplifiers suddenly become 10x more powerful in portable HIFI or has the measurement system changed? The sound quality of most iPod style docks is as good or worse than this was in the 80s
"Modern" transistor radios in the 60s were perceived as lower sound quality than old tube radios from the 40s and 50s.The sound quality of most iPod style docks is as good or worse than this was in the 80s
There was a main reason behind that: tiny speakers and cabinets vs way larger desktop ones.
A custom built same size "Ipod dock" will have rigid walls, not thin plastic with 1000 resonances all over the place, be properly sealed (or ducted) and not having 1000 slits and holes (piano buttons / slider pots / cassette mechanism / etc.) and you can put proper speakers there, then drive them with a real power amp.
Now inside that boombox thin lossy plastic cabinet, I bet the original speakers are quite acceptable; any other will either be cheaper (not what you want) or if nominally "better quality" completely wasted, not because "it will bee too expensive for such a lowly task" but simply because it will sound *worse* under such circunstances.
IF you insist, get a couple Neo magnet Faitals, same size and impedance, killer little speakers, and contrary to others, quite efficient, because they are mainly intended for PA duty.
