Flat Earthers

I think we always forget our irrational side, that is always there, even in who try to follow the path of science. Sometimes people think and do things that don't lead to any benefit, for any one. Why? I don't know... People like to tell stories, build complexe castles of sand with their own internal logic. Just for pleasure. Problems begin when we identify these constructs with reality.

That explains what is going on in the heads of flatearthers and I agree.

However this implies that we were and are being fed lies about a globular Earth so somebody must be profiting from this to keep it up.
Keep it up for 3000 years no less and I very much struggle to think of any entity or organisation to exist for that long, never mind one which would benefit from a population believing from a globular Earth model.

There are dogmatic reasons to believe in a flat earth. Most of them are deeply rooted in subjects that are off limits here. I don't understand the purpose of the conspiracy, why would anyone do that? What would be the advantage? But most of this isn't rational, it's faith based.

What interests my are the test. There have been many, some of them quite famous, that "proved" a stretch of water to be flat over several miles. On a globular earth it would not be. How could these experiments show that? What's the trick? That's what I set about to duplicate and test. And yes, lasers. 😀

Ok, but some of them have an agenda, I don't believe they all genuinely believe the results, this is where the conspiracy theory is valid. It's very difficult to stay within the rules.....I just had to delete a whole lot....this place is not a democracy...look where that's got us...Ha!

I believe many of the supposed proofs of Flat Earth have been faked.

An example is this video on youtube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vP7lyAKNpj4

It claims to use a camera to view two platforms in the ocean while viewing at 1' elevation and then 35' elevation.

From 2:00 to 2:05 it appears to me that the camera has been moved from 1' elevation to a greater height, and then zoomed to the two platforms used for reference.

If you go to full screen at 2:05 and capture to paint (or other graphic editor), then do the same at 4:10 where the elevation is purported to be 35', and compare the two images, you can see more of the ocean in back of the platforms in the later image, and you can see more of the rear platform from the water to the main deck in the later image.

It debunks flat earth even though it was manipulated to disprove that the earth is round.

A lot of this is amusing, and somewhat interesting, but having circumnavigated the globe in one trip involving 4 different 747's, and doing a bit of sailing on the (curved) Atlantic ocean, I'm not interested in proving the earth is flat, round, or potato chipped.

I would rather spend my experiment time finding the melting point of some big tubes, or some new and interesting ways to mix vintage and state of the art electronic devices in a novel circuit.

^ So, are you saying that the idea of it is being a conspiracy is a conspiracy?

Applying the KISS principle all available evidence confirms that earth is a sphere. If it were flat somebody must have forged the evidence continuously throughout the last 3000 years. Nobody would attempt to do that without a major payoff along the line.

So either flatearthers believe in a conspiracy theory or they are just awkward idiots and do not really justify any effort convincing them otherwise.
It is not as if they were dangerous and we can just go back to laughing at them.

"you can ever get high enough"

That can be interpreted several ways. No device exists or no device can exist, I suspect the latter would fit into the biblical context as in the tower of Babylon. My take is still this is a tiny fringe group with a very particular anti-secular stance, there is nothing at work here but religion.

I agree with regards to the experiments.

Plano, he makes many mistakes.

Look at the reference photographs he uses to calculate the height from the ocean to the platform deck. Notice the relative tidal height. In later images, the tide is different and he makes no effort to account for it.

He has very poor control of the experiment.
