Hello
I need a headphone amp to run from the take off from my quad 34 preamp.
Has anyone any experience of this h##p://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2017-New-TT650-HiFi-Headphone-Amplifier-Kit-Ref-LEHMANN-Headphone-Amp-DIY.

Ross RE-265, cobalt samarium, old but sound good on my M-dac and marantz 6005. 38 ohms resistance and I never have much volume.what headphone?
Quad 401. I need to turn the volume right down on the speakers so others can listen to tv. The preamp has a take off for audio out and I was going to use that as an input to head amp. What power amp are you using? Have you considered a resistor divider network on the output?
If you have access to a digital "passthrough" connection, this has worked well for me driving older Senn cans...

Yes it is a 405-2.Do you mean 405? I'd be tempted to use a divider network on the speaker outputs
If I use a divider network on the speaker outputs that would mean the speakers are working. I need them to be silent and the phones on.
The quad 34 has a line level audio out playing whatever the preamp has selected. If the volume control is turned to zero the speakers are quiet. It seems a pity not to use that.

I will be playing an analogue signal, either from vhf fm tuner or phono. If you have access to a digital "passthrough" connection, this has worked well for me driving older Senn cans...

True, but you could switch them out, ie, take the outputs to a switch that toggles between the speakers and a divider network for your headphones. In most amplifiers with a headphone socket the speakers are automatically disconnected when the headphone plug is inserted
Headphones are usually plugged in to preamp so only line level audio is switched. If I put a switch on the speakers it would have to switch 100 watts rms at 15 ohms is about 3 amps quite a lot.True, but you could switch them out, ie, take the outputs to a switch that toggles between the speakers and a divider network for your headphones. Apart from the fact that so much fuss is made of speaker cables cant imagine what would be said about a switch effecting quality.
I don't know what to say about any of that, other than it's all wrong. I'm not going to argue with you, I was trying to help
I bought a pre-assembled 'Lehmann clone' from ebay, and it sounds good to me- though I'm not sure it's the same as the $$$ actual Lehmann.
There are lots of options for headphone amps, including DACs with headphone amps included, etc..

I actually do appreciate your help, I am a beginner and am waiting for others to comment.I don't know what to say about any of that, other than it's all wrong. I'm not going to argue with you, I was trying to help
Thats interesting, the clones are about £100 here.I bought a pre-assembled 'Lehmann clone' from ebay, and it sounds good to me- though I'm not sure it's the same as the $$$ actual Lehmann.

A few thoughts:
You can often get those 'kits' in fully assembled form for not much extra money. If it doesn't work, you can't be blamed for the problem.
I can rationalize buying a 'clone' if 'the real thing' is grossly overpriced, and if the clone doesn't look like a 'forgery'. A Lehmann clone with the Lehmann name and logo on the front panel is something I wouldn't buy.
My personal opinion is that there's a lot more variability between headphones ('quality') than between headphone amps, so you'll probably be satisfied with any amp that will drive your headphones. Some HP amps are cheap enough that they are in the 'play' category.
There are quite a few DIY options as well - are you interested in that sort of project?
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
( scraped from http://www.cashgenerator.co.uk/prod...s/vintage-ross-re-265-on-ear-headphones-GT667 )75 Ohm, 100 dB/mW
so 4 Vpk, 5 ma should give 120 dB SPL
120 dB SPL is literally deafening at minuites per day
but can occur as rare peaks in live music - but which you should only want for seconds in hours of listening to extreme dynamic range music

Those are the ones. Only listen to classical music, something like lute violin. Full orchestra rarely and I am very mean with volume.( scraped from Vintage Ross RE-265 On Ear Headphones GLASGOW 2 )

Yes definitely, I think I will plump for:A few thoughts:

Headphone Amplifier Board Reference Lehmann circuit design Kit AC 15V?0?15V | eBay
It doesn't have Lehmann on it, is cheap and I have a case and a nice toroid transformer. What I realy wanted was a review from a user and victoriaguy has given that.

That's more diy! Good choice, IMO.😉
