Are you really interested in 'Hi-Fi'?

That is surprising considering Kosher rules require schmaltz in some cases.

When last in Heppenheim it was served at breakfast with dark bread every morning, maybe just our hosts taste.

Had to look up the word as i haven't even heard it (ever). I must admit I rarely know/meet jewish people and I tend to stay away from eastern Europe. However when I think about it I recall seeing this stuff in Bavaria one time.

Well the reason the EU capital is in Belgium is because it is inoffensive to the large nations.

Essentially the same reasoning why the capital of Australia is Canberra rather than Sydney or Melbourne; Canada's capital is Ottawa instead of Toronto or Montreal and West Germany chose Bonn over Hamburg or Munich ie keep the big players quiet by giving the honour to somewhere that is otherwise insignificant. ;-)

So not the best, just the least worst. And the national dish is frites!
I didn't forget chocolate and waffles, I just don't much like them.

That doesn't take away that the Americans are jealous of our chocolate ay? 🙂

It's gotta be said IME American chocolate is rather nasty.

I suspect a purely financial behind Kraft's purchase of Cadbury's rather than belgian agency.
Cadbury's got a pass from the EU due to tradition otherwise their chocolate would have contained too little chocolate to legally be called chocolate.
As a result Cadbury-branded chocolate can be made cheaper than others.

I like your waffles, frites and chocolate although I would insist on separate plates but as a German I have issues with some of your beers. ;-)

Noooo! Ah, unless you mean the muck with cherries in it? The best beer I have EVER had is St. Sixtus from Westvleteren. Sint-Sixtusabdij Westvleteren You pretty much have to go there to get it.

I go there every so often and buy some 'for my parents' but actually it's for my grandpa. He loves it too. 😛

God awful...... as tasteless as Canadian big brand factory beer.

isn't that why Canada imports from Germany & Belgium, the two equally good countries in terms of beer? 😀

Disagree. I suspect most here would disagree too.

All attempts thus far at enhancing stereo with extra channels (real or otherwise) for music reproduction have not survived for long. At the very least that means that their disadvantages outweighed whatever advantage they offered.

Can't agree with that logic. If the goal of hi-fi is to recreate an acoustic soundfield it sucks at that with only 2 channels. So from that sense it is broken.

As for attempts to fix it failing, the success of Sonus shows that the average punter is still happy with mono. So the issue is that, amongst the buying public sh*ts given about absolute fidelity are around the zero mark. Sad but true.

5.1/7.1/whatever they call atmos nowdays should have improved matters but for many reasons hasn't, even when good program material is available (checkout Chandos catalogue). I am wildly guessing that that main 2 reason are
1. Audiophools are 2 wrapped up in the 2-channel past to embrace this
2. music lovers can't see they will enjoy it any more being in the sound rather than in front of it.

I have a vain hope that, due to the one good thing the iphone has done for the world (make people take headphone listening more seriously) that we are on the verge of something good and that the sort of tricks the smyth realiser can do will be built into every phone within 3 years. But my history of predicting trends since 1990 has been at best deplorable.
