Try this..... Cheap, simple to build, sound is superior compared to many megabuck preamps. Line level only, gain is about 12-14x, drives 15-22 k loads with ease. Those russian tubes linger around everywhere for a few dollars a piece.... If you need, I have phono (MM) schematic too with the same tubes.

as a preamp junkie, I can tell you sanyo plus is the best I ever tried

The BF862 single ended preamp by Juma sounds fantastic and easy to make.

How much work are you willing to put in? Something like a Yamaha C-4 is a darn good preamp, but may appreciate addressing age-related woes. Also, the headphone output in this model is less than ideal (very high gain, high output impedance, and temperature compensation looks suspect even for a Class A job).
Both amps are very good.i don't know how sound yamaha c4, what could you say about ?
