Midrange horn driver options

It looks like a very simple horn, so what you see is what you get 🙂

You could compare it to the JBL 2380A spec sheet - same mouth size & depth (but without the diffraction slot).

It also looks like a shorter version of the cheap ebay horns I linked / have a pair of, which made a good combo with a 4" driver.

I assume Bill's Synergy horn designer has inputs to allow different aspect ratios, horn cut-off specs and use HR or similar to proof/fine tune it.

Thanks. I got to spend some time with Bill's Synergy spreadsheet and HR today. It's quite intriguing to be able to combine a HF and midrange driver in the same horn. I see some threads where people have used the premade plastic horns as well.

I'm modeling some drivers now to see what looks reasonable. So far the TC9s still look good and a 4 inch Visaton.

I think this one looks really good. Nice and simple:

Thanks. OK, understood.

Another candidate might be Community Pro SH494. This one is larger and has more response info available. Exponential flare. The WG45-50 doesn't say what type of flare is used. Would you know?

I'd guess expo because it doesn't open up to 90 degrees at the mouth, but I don't know - it might be another flare, truncated, as the usual flares seem to be similar near the throat and only differ towards the mouth.

...so the way you mount to the baffle is probably going to be just as significant as the the nominal curve of the horn. For example, if you add a big roundover to an expo flare, you get a final shape that's pretty similar to a tractrix.

Is the SH494 only available on the secondary (used) market? I like that the Community data sheet gives the flare rate - usually you have to guesstimate it or calculate from measuring the throat angle. It seems odd that driver and horn manufacturers don't usually release this info, making it hard to get parts with matching throat angles.

In my own case, I picked a cheap horn that was a good looking shape and relatively deep (30cm rather than the standard 20cm), to better match the very low flare rate of my specific drivers (old JBL 2445). Because I was experimenting on the cheap, I kludged extensions onto the throat and mouth myself, as seen in post 4 of this: poverty horn

ABS plastic is good for hacking, cos you can sand and cut it without making a big old mess.

The datasheet of SH494 only shows a crude 2D CAD drawing of the horn to illustrate the dimensions.
It does open up to 90 degrees at the mouth by means of a roundover/end correction, it's got a diffraction slot, yet without the usual narrowing and it's very smooth like the rest of the "interior".
Moreover, Community puts balsawood between the fiberglass to avoid resonances and includes a smart and durable mounting plate that doesn't crack under the load of DH1As and similar heavyweights.

The "vertical ellipse" around the throat is the carpet reflected on the glossy fiberglass.

Also, keep in mind the directivity in the specsheet is influenced by the M200 driver that was used, which lacks a phaseplug.
