Some attachments open up as an overlay on the same page. You can look at them while you type a reply. Nothing gets lost!
Some attachments open up a new page to display. You cannot see the page that attachment came from. You have to close that new page to go back to the post you were reading. If you start a reply and then open up one of these "new page" attachments you lose your part typed reply.
I don't know why we have these two different versions of attachment "open".
