That is about it! They want to make a nice profit. Better sell many cheap ones that a few expensive ones.

Yeah but now it sounds like they wanted to make allot of money, there prices where absurd low , allot of bang for the buck. if you lived in amarica that is. in the netherlands a set of second hand beaten SMGA would be around the new price or even more expensive then a new set in the US. since shipping is expensive and the distributor here takes a ..... well big margin if i look at the replacements tweeters fro the tymp 1D with a price tag of 900 eur0 a piece... haha

I even got a phone call from the European distributor when I wrote about the pricing of the Magnepan in Europe... Everything that passes the Atlantic gets in a different price region. I have bought a set of Tympani IVa and had it shipped from Chicago to Sweden. Not very cheap but a lot cheaper than buying them in Europe.

Magnepan orginally sourced most of their material locally. Winey had links to 3M, who supplied the Mylar and adhesives. Arnold supplied the rubber magnets (Plastiform). Audio Research served as a distributor in the early Days. My first Tympani even had Audio Research written on the connecting plates.

yeah all local manufactured stuff. but my dream sort of, would be doing the same. there is not reason why there is no brand doing something similar on this side of the pond. since patents are long time gone, and also the motor on itself is as basic as a planar gets. i would be using laminated foil instead of wires. but then again the wires are a genius idea being able to have the smallest gap possible and very basic construction method.

But laminates wont come lose after years (if not over driven) most megnepans being around second hand have lose wires. except for the new ones of course. since the wire is hard to glue to mylar they used an over coating (encapsulating) making things heavy and cumbersome. production wise stretching a laminates completely etched foil is hard through, only possible if the rest of the panels is done with higher tolerances so you can align the foil the same way time after time.
