Is there any way I can find a transformer inside the EU for a Firstwatt F4, F5, or F6, that could replace the $114 (incl. shipping) Antek 400VA 18v+18v, part number AN-4218? I am ordering components for a new First Watt build and I want to try to cut costs. Got a new electrostatic channel that needs an amplifier. Right now I have to alternate between channels. :S
Hi Rewind
You could check:
Toroidy in Poland Transformatory toroidalne - Producent transformatorów Toroidy.pl
Amplimo in Holland Home - Amplimo
AE Europe in Holland AE transformatoren specialist in transformatoren voor de elektrotechnische industrie
Canterbury Windings in UK Canterbury Windings Home

Besides the 400 VA 2x18 VAC (AA-98043) Noratel from Elfa? It's 734,- SEK before shipping.
(Art.Nr. 156-13-823)
Edit:
Toroidy looks like a great place to get transformers! Thank you Rolle!
They even have some chassis.

Toroidy from Poland gets my vote too. I have built several amps with their audio grade toroids, they're as good as it gets imho.
Thank you so much! I was ready to give up and buy another Antek with $50 import duty.
Do we have a winner? http://sklep.toroidy.pl/en_US/p/TTSA0500-Transformer-AUDIO-TSA500VA-voltage-to-50-V/319
Net price: €73, 500VA, 2 x 18 V

I used a Sedlbauer RSO-825059 (500VA, 18+18V) in my Aleph J. Possibly a bit more expensive than the other recommendations but excellent quality.
Also:
TTSA0400 - Transformer AUDIO TSA400VA - voltage to 50V - Shop Toroidy.pl
Net price: €46, 400VA, 2 x 18 V
The audio grade transformers are shielded with "coated SYN-SHIELD copper tape between windings"

The Sedlbauer is the same almost.
€75, 500VA 2x115V -> 2x18V / 1x36V; Sedlbauer, RSO-825059
Ringkerntrafo 500VA 2x115V -> 2x18V / 1x36V ; Sedlbauer, RSO-825059
German or Polish quality. Hm.
choose whatever you can find , under condition that they can guarantee no buzz under load
which is approx. 200W , if loaded with both channels

does mechanical buzzzzzzzz translate into secondary line noise ?
and does that translate into noise going through to the speaker output ?
If so, how much mechanical noise is needed to produce such issues ?

well , you can drive with loose cam-chain ....... but nobody can say - how long before disaster .........
or ..... one day you're going either to change cam-chain , or to bang it with big hammer ......

Big hammer it is 😛
No it's just one of those questions ive wondered about.
one of my amps developed a bad buzz from its toriodal, didnt seem to affect audio quality that i ever noticed.
Always thought if the secondary filtering was doing its job, then there shouldnt be any issue.

I was going to build a F4 for my tube amp, but then I continued to read comments, and all of a sudden I am building a F6. I have now ordered all but the passive components. Strange what can happen in 24 hours. I recently got electrostatic panels and they show what the tube amp did wrong, and what the F5 does right, something horns could not. If the F6 sounds more tubey, because of the transformer and caps, and also is as clean as the F5, then I don't think I want to process the signal through a cheap tube amp and the F4 which some say is not as clear as the F5 and F6, however lovely and musical the F4 might be.
And I chose German quality.
Plz don't tell me you used Sedlbauer. 🙂

No the amp in question was a factory amp not a diy.
It had a hard life before I got it.
The noise developed over a short period of time.
I replaced the transformer and it's all silent again.
This one works very well for me.
400Va so plenty of power.

We are lucky Antek is in the USA. They have great selection and very good prices and quick delivery. I usually get new trafos within days of ordering and shipping is reasonable.
400VA 18VAC that I just bought ($51) ended up at $70 delivered. Works very well for Pass Class A designs.

When I check right the Polish transformer (Toroidy) has an electrostatic screen between primary and secondary; the Sedlbauer not.
Because toroidal transformers are actually a bit too wide band because of the good coupling this screen is very useful as it couples HF noise on the power line to ground.
You could ask Toroidy what they choose for core excitation (in Tesla).
In the past I had toroidal transformers made by Petra Toroid in Romania (a German-Romanian joint venture); they were willing to make the screens, and a lower core excitation as well.
The lower core excitation requires a slightly larger core.
Advantages of the lower core excitation: less inrush current, even lower strayfields, and less prone to mechanical hum.
When I am right they still provide one of my Dutch customers with these toroids.

I will e-mail Sedlbauer and ask if they have thought about this. Shame I already got the transformer. But, maybe I will be fine. I have not noticed anything weird with my F5 build that used 400VA Antek AS-4218. It is quiet as a mouse when I don't play music. Antek write nothing about electrostatic screens in the product description. Feeling a bit paranoid?
