Just arrived home last night. Caught a bacterial pinkeye infection on the ferry. Good times.
Resuming work on this when I'm able. Same status as before, have a number of Pro boards built, haven't started the stereo or PBTL cards yet. I'll probably put Pro's aside and start building classic cards for a while.
Ouch, that's some bad luck. Get well soon.
I am thinking maybe you can ship my Wiener classic first when you are done. Anyways, take care.
Turns out I didn't catch pink-eye per se, but had what I thought was a head cold but turned out to be a full blown sinus infection. Travelled to my ears and eyes.
I've been doped up on antibiotics and ordered to stay home, but I'm on the upswing now. I'll put in an hour or so of work tomorrow.

Hope that the bug did not ruin your vacation.
Sometimes it is best to take a hobby break and smell the roses. Enjoy the last of summer while you can, as I have birch & maple leaves falling already, eek.
I assume that you can add the barnacles to your existing pcb, to implement the PFFB method?

This all came on at the end of my vacation when I was heading back to NS. I worked half a day on Tuesday, decided I couldn't do it, went to the doctor on Wednesday and I've been home since. So I guess I've got a third week of vacation out of it... though I'd rather be at work than this.
Just did SMT on two stereo cards, haven't tested them, feeling pretty miserable.
Looks like the PFFB mod is possible on the Pro by adding four resistors to the board and adding or changing the input gain resistors to up the gain. Glad I added series resistors to the card.

Don't mean to be a bother, but any news if the bare boards got shipped out? I thought you had mentioned they were going out before your vacation so I've been keeping an eye out for them.
Damnit - those cards are sitting in the door of my Golf. Didn't get them mailed out before I went on vacation, and haven't sat in the car since. I'll grab them and mail them tomorrow AM on the way to work.
Sorry!
Sorry!
Wiener 2.0 PBTL Finally Up and Running
Well after moving across the country to the warm Southeast from the San Francisco Bay Area at the beginning of the year, I've settled down in my new job and home and set up shop and started working on my audio projects again. I got my Wiener 2.0 PBTL amps out and installed a set of CoilCraft VER2923-153L output inductors and wired up a pair of vintage Altec/Peerless 15335A bridging transformers to convert the unbalanced inputs to the differential inputs of the Wiener amps. I bought a pair through eBay for the same price of one CineMag CLMI-15/15B transformer. I used a pair of Belton octal tube sockets to mount the transformers and used some vintage-style 22AWG cotton covered pushback wire to connect the inputs. I have to say that I like what I am hearing from these PBTL amps, and I really enjoy my Wiener 1.0 stereo amp with the CineMag CMLI-15/15B input transformers. Great job gmarsh!

Looking good, and congrats on resuming the audio hobby after the successful relocation! Have you tried without the input caps?

Not yet. Have you heard a difference "with" vs. "without?" I have a set of some 2.2uF Russian KBG-MN paper-in-oil caps that I may try in this amp. They're pretty bulky and might not improve the sound quality--I'm still thinking about it.
Leaving California was a tough decision, but I received an offer I couldn't refuse, and I really like being on the East Coast again. Since I've moved, I was able to purchase a mint condition McIntosh MC240 6L6 tube amp. I just got a set of some Authenticap can caps made by F&T of Germany for refurbishing the power supply. I also have some Russian K40y-9 paper-in-oil caps for replacing some of the signal caps.

Nope, I skipped the input film caps when I initially wired up my CineMags to the PBTLs.
I was lured to the east coast twice, but I apparently have too many roots in California so here I am again. Paradise in many ways, but at a cost! Glad you could indulge in some audio goodness.

rhing: Glad you enjoy the amps, congrats on the job/move.
Bitta progress. SMT done on 4 more stereo cards, and built one of them fully, haven't tested it yet.

Nice.
Just wondering how much faster we can get our boards for my order if we can do the thru hole soldering ourselves.

If we do through-hole soldering by ourselves, gmarsh won't be able to test the board. Am concerned just in case there is any fault in smd soldering.

Yeah, faults do happen 🙂 Spent a couple hours at it last night. 2 of the 4 stereo cards need the TPA chip reworked due to bridging/alignment, 2 passed. Also got a Pro running that failed testing earlier.
Going to spend all day today building boards.

Today's accomplishments as of 6PM. 2 boards in the oven, 1 left to go in.
And 7 boards with the SMT baked on.
Have to fix solder bridges on the TPAs and fix a couple tombstoned parts, stuff in the through hole parts and hope for the best. Doing that tonight after dinner.

For those waiting on their gmarsh Wiener TPA3118 amps, your patience will pay off. After setting the switching frequency to 400kHz and turning down the gain from 26dB to 20dB, this amp is really singing with my ARC LS7 tube line stage preamp (16dB gain). If anyone is willing to use input transformers to convert from unbalanced to balanced (differential) inputs, the Altec/Peerless 15335A bridging transformers work really well with the Wiener TPA3118 PBTL amps. I have not done an apples-to-apples comparison of the CineMag CMLI-15/15B transformers to the Altec/Peerless 15335A transformers, but I believe them to be very similar. The specifications are almost identical and Ed Reichenbach whose son Tom Reichenbach founded CineMag was a transformer engineer for Altec Lansing before starting his own company, Reichenbach Engineering.
I have both amplifiers running in Master mode, and they share the output of my modified Astron RS-12A linear power supply. In comparison to my Wiener stereo amp, this amp provides greater inner detail, improved tonality especially in the midrange, and tighter, deeper bass. The separation is also better creating a more holographic image and large soundstage. The differences are subtle, but I can hear them. I think a possible upgrade path is to build separate power supplies like the AMB Laboratories Sigma 11 linear power supplies and separate these amps into monoblock amps.

Thanks for the update. I see you have lots of baking ahead. 🙂

Do u mean you found lower switching fz to be better? I have heard otherwise and 1.2mhz is actually the best.
I have some cheap Chinese 3118 board playing while waiting for the Wiener and I concur I like transformer input better than cap input. I have tried several from fairly cheap Chinese 10k:10K to some odd vintage Tamradio telephony tranny and they all sounded pretty good. I still have a Jensen 11p to try and see if its really much better.
I also have a Sigma 11 board coming for PS too.😎
After quite some time of daily use, yesterday I changed out the Pro for another/different/beefier diy chip amp. I really miss the Pro! So far I've only run it from a very large brick, but that's all it seems to need. I've yet to test my prediction, but I anticipate that the Pro will benefit less from PS upgrades than my TPA3116/8 amps did (Wieners, DUG).
