Recent experience with MCM drivers

MCM has a couple interesting new drivers. One of them is an 8 with copper shorting rings, 7.5mm geometric xmax, cast basket with under-spider venting, and 89dB/W/m sensitivity.

MCM Audio Select 8" Die Cast Woofer 8 Ohm Rubbber Surround | 200-160305M01     (200160305M01    ) | MCM Audio Select

On paper, it's a near-optimum design for a project I'm sketching: compact sealed 3-way with a Scan Disco 10F and Seas DXT passively crossed to a TBD active 8" midbass with PWR-ICE. That's ignoring cost, which I'm not considering because I've always found cabinet costs and crossover design time costs to swamp driver cost. So no real incentive to cut costs on drivers. But the MCM is also cheap at $40 each.

I've never bought drivers from MCM though. Do they tend to meet their specs? Is their unit-unit consistency decent? Several good drivers and even companies have been felled by buildhouse QC issues.

The MCM drivers they offer look pretty good for the money. Not often you see a cast basket on budget drivers. While I hear the TS measurements may differ from the spec sheets, once they've been broken in an measured - they shouldn't be too difficult to work with.

I know one person who was using their 18" woofers for an open baffle project as the variation in the QTS spec favoured an OB alignment for the woofer. He seemed content with them, not sure if they've moved on or what.

Mcm

I have purchased these from Mcm in the past and used them a few times as replacements for some home and some small pa speakers/monitors and they play well loud clear and take abuse but not sure if they spec out as stated . They are the 55-1732 6.5 woofer .

Historically MCM drivers have not had the best tolerances on their specifications. However most of the reports I recall were with their subwoofer lines having low BL due to poorly energized magnets. My personal experience is that the cast frame 5" drivers 55-3870 and the aluminum cone woofers 55-2185 were within reasonable tolerances of their specifications.

The new cast frame 8" woofers do look interesting. I have a good application for them if they meet their specs.

Received my pair of 6.5" yesterday. Broke them in last night by first mechanically exercising them by hand and then running near Xmax at 40 Hz for several hours. Tested them using DATS and a test box to calculate Vas. My measured T/S params match the published values very closely. Impedance plots also match each other well. Both drivers have a small "blip" around 600 Hz, will have to look at that when I run FR & distortion plots. So far I like what I'm seeing.

I had a chance to look at the 55-5670 (8"). Overall at least from visual inspection they look really nice. The only thing that looked a little bit like cost-cutting to me was the machining on the outside of the top-plate. A little faceted, rather than smoothly round like ScanSpeak Discovery or Peerless HDS etc. Pretty much the most minor possible thing.

I have not had a chance to put power to them. More to come.
