µFonkenWK 1v0 for Fostex FF85wk Build

I didn't see a write up with pics for this so I thought I'd start one. Several members pointed me to the µFonkenWK 1v0 with Fostex FF85wk's for desktop speakers. I will be pairing these with a sub (8" ported from a car install years ago, but very musical) and for now a 2.1 plate amp.

I have the cabinets cut out and am assembling. These buggers are TINY! One tip- rout the holes for the drivers before you cut the material if possible- there is very little to hold the router level as you pass around. Note my deviation, which will fortunately be covered by the driver plate. I didn't have enough room to get my 45 degree chamfer bit in there, so I used a round-over for the inside of the speaker cutout.

these should be very good...

...I know Dave et al love the little FF85WK drivers. Add a small (but excellent) sub to them and you'll end up with something quite special that may even be suitable for use in a larger (living room?, etc) rooms.

I finished these up today and I am VERY impressed. For a lot of the older prog rock I listen to, these barely need a sub. I cannot fathom the bass out of these! Staging is very clean. At the moment I'm powering them with a Sony home theater amp.

I don't have much to compare them to other than my main system, which is hardly fair. Short Thors, tube preamp, Rotel power amp, DAC, digitally eq'd for my room, etc. I'd say the Fonkens are slightly less detailed in the highs and obviously far less bass response. But the staging is very, very good, and extremely impressive bass for the size.

Very happy with these, especially for a quick $175 build.
