Hi all.

I have a 48VDC 500W SMPS laying around from Meanwell (USP-48-500) which i wan't to find a purpose for in life. Unfortunately i cannot turn it into a powerful tube amp, but is there another fun DIY project (perhaps lowbudget) which i can use it for? Chip amp? Hybrid tube/chip amp?

Crazy thread i am creating but hopefully it will end up in a pool of awesome options :))

Thanks!

That'll require a BTL type amplifier. Maybe something Class D, bridged output and single-supply operation are quite common there. Balanced input much recommended, the amp would be a Type I (safety earthed) device anyway. Maybe a fully balanced topology even?

Best-case power you can hope for is ~70 W / 8 ohms or 140 W / 4 ohms per channel.

70W/8R is plenty of juice for my open baffle speakers!

I have a pair of LJM's L25D's (some have used the L15D too) powered by a 400W +/-53Vdc SMPS and it produces plenty of solid, clean power for my needs. It's rated at 250 watts at +/-70vdc, so I am probably getting ~175watts.
I have cranked it a few dozen times with some very inefficient 82db speakers and could get too loud for my ears without clipping. Typically listen to a DIY set a speakers about 85db and no hum, buzz, only a very small buzz (sometimes I can't even hear it) at turn on.
Should be a very good fit for you SMPS and fairly cheap. YMMV.

What if my supply is only +48VDC?
