finishing horns
Shrinkage and expansion of 3mm over a length of 60cm suggests that with my horns of 100cm we might have to deal with up to 10mm change.
I am hoping to avoid the issue altogther by properly sealing the horns. I remember John Hasquin commenting on this earlier and suggesting some sealing agent which is quite effective.
My original plan was to use a dark walnut stain to match the smaller horns that Louis had been commissioned to build. It is now relatively clear that the smaller horns will have to be sourced elsewhere. So, I am now strongly tempted to be very cautious and am thinking of using a dark red finish for these horns. So after sealing, i will need to find a company that may be able to spray paint the horns.
I will know a little more once Louis tells me how he will proceed on Tuesday.
keeping my fingers crossed for now,
regards
Rakesh
Just a note on the finishing and cracking - I had a set of stacked MDF enclosures crack like wesayso's experience. The reason, at least in my case, is that I had a vertical panel (baffle) that spanned the stacked MDF slices just like it looks like wesayso did. When the humidity changed, all the stacked panels shrank in thickness, but not in width or length. So the baffle panel was clamped by the shrinking layers of the enclosure, causing those layers to crack. JLH's horn (and it appears the OP's horn) does not have this type of construction so would not have experienced this issue. However I imagine it changes its length slightly as humidity changes depending on how well it's sealed. I'd estimate I saw around a 3mm change in height on a ~600mm tall stack of MDF slices.
Good luck finishing your horns.

I had 6 coats of polyurethane (floor) paint on the inside and out. Just saying that the wood probably shifts anyway depending on how dry it is when sealed. Granted, my stack was 222.5 cm, all bb grade birch ply.
The only difference is the inside didn't get stain...
After cutting them up, filling the gaps with foam and wrapping them in epoxy plus matt they never cracked again.

I read the rules you highlighted and of course they do make sense.
I have been waiting a very long time indeed. Well over a year now. In that time, I have been assured on multiple occasions that the work was being done and that all that was required was a little bit more time. I guess my reserve of patience is getting somewhat exhausted.
But I will be patient and trust that the latest batch of promises, excuses and assurances are actually worth a dime and that Louis is indeed a basically honest guy who hit some difficult times and will deliver in the end.
