Hi -- could anyone recommend a good book for learning about how to test and repair old valve/tube amplifiers?
The RCA manuals. One favourite: Radiotron Designer's Handbook' an Australian book I think.
Edit: oh, not sure these are good for repair. But they are great books to have by the bed and in the single-sitting room.

There are quite a few free books here that will help you to understand audio circuit operation,
and so how to repair them. tubebooks.org - Vintage info from the age of vacuum tubes
There are several books on repairing valve radios. Read the introduction and then the audio chapters.
Available for free, off the WWW, is NEETS. NEETS is U.S. Navy training material, which should allow the OP to start building foundation knowledge.
