I just saw a picture of a set of ear buds and it reminded me of a question that's been in my head for a while now; why do some modern ear buds/phones have plugs with four connections (TRRS?) instead of three as in the past? Just wondering.

I believe that 4th connection, closest to the plug body, is used for video/mic. Here is a picture:

So from the tip: left channel, right channel, ground, then video or microphone. For earbuds they probably just ignore that 4th position.
