First Timer ESL Build

Hi all,

I just wanted to share some photos of my first ESL build!
It is a 12"x12" panel made with 12 micron mylar and a PVA glue coating.
I had a good experience building this so I think once I have some more time I will build two 12"x24" panels. I am not in anyway an audiophile I just wanted a new project and this sounded like a good idea.
Heres an album with some photos and a video: https://goo.gl/photos/9QoggxqEqapksFad7

Thanks Charlie!
Your guide inspired and helped me immensely. It gave me the courage to make my own but I still have a few questions. I used 12 micron mylar in this panel but you think I would have gotten any different/better results using a thinner diaphragm such as 6 micron?
Thanks,
Ben

Well ......vary cool..
thanks for the pic ...... sound...
can you give the pva coating mix....?
Thanks! The mixture isn't exact I used about 1 part glue to 10 parts water and just a tiny drop of dish detergent to allow the glue to apply more evenly. I used 'Archival Products' brand glue. This is the bottle:
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

GJ and welcome!!!

what you are listening to could well be the soap instead of the pva. not all pva worked in the begining, and they usually stop working after a while all together:)

you can clean pva so you could do a proper coating later on, like licron or the ausie stuff

Thanks Charlie!

Well Ben, I've never tried the 12-micron film but I'm thinking the 6-micron film's lower mass should translate to a bit better treble extension.

Hey, if you decided to build another set of panels (I'm sure you will... you got the fever now buddy)... why not go for broke and build a tall line source?

Is there a guide for this build? I know there was mention of a guide by CharlieM but I can't seem to find it. Can someone help me out? I would love to build something similar to this.

I think the "guide" may have been in reference to my DIY ESL website below; although my website has evolved quite a bit since the speaker discussed in this thread was built.

Thanks for getting back with me! Your website has a lot of great information.

Some differences I have noticed some differences between the amp panel between your site and Bens build? Is a step up transformer needed?

I assume you are referring to the small transformer in my HV bias supply circuit, whereas; Ben's bias supply shown the photo in post #1 doesn't have one.

It is not necessary to use a transformer in the bias supply but I recommend it for two reasons. First; that little transformer isolates the downstream components (and YOU if you happen to touch any of those components) from the mains current, which can be potentially lethal. Secondly; the little transformer doubles the input voltage so that fewer diode/capacitor stages are then needed to generate the desired output voltage.

Thanks Charlie. Sorry for the late reply back.
I plan on ordering parts and building the amp panel but I need some help understanding how to correctly build the actual speaker.

Can you (or Ben) help me understand the process and supplies needed to build this transducer?
The only reference I have is looking at pictures that Ben posted in his very first post. There is mention in this thread of a PVA coating mix and micron film but I just don't fully understand the process.

Any information would be greatly appreciated! :)

My website has detailed instructions with build photos, schematics, parts lists, etc...for building both perf metal type and segmented wire type ESL panels. Just click the link and the bottom of this post.
