James, did you see my response to your post on the 'Best DAC is no DAC' thread? I suggest a processor that benchmarks at around 8000 or better and 6-8Gb of memory should be fine - that's what works for me.

Ray
Thanks Ray, yes I got that, but I also note that's using only 1/3 of it's power to do the job, so I was wondering whether such a high spec was overkill

I think the I7 4790 would be a good baseline. nothing slower, but faster okay.
Cheers Mike, as I understand, the difference between i5 and i7 is that i7 supports multi-threading, but that only makes a difference if the application has been written with multithreading in mind, otherwise you may as well use the cheaper i5? I had a quick search and I'm pretty sure HQPlayer doesn't support multi threading.

And Roon/HQplayer, yes!!!! And I also note this release includes Roon to Squeezebox devices too 🙂 I'd better get my skates on and join the party 🙂

I just saw the license fee $499.., yikes!

Is it that much goodness? 😉
Yeah, as Mike says, that's the cost to own it for life.
You can try free for 14 days, but I have put it off so far as I wanted to be sure I could spend 14 days where I had something it would work with. I started a trial of Roon this afternoon and so far I really like it. It's a great tool for discovering, finding out, exploring and enjoying music. I am sure it will bring me much enjoyment, so I am very likely to continue with it. I linked it to my DDDAC via my bbb/botic/hermes/cronus using Squeezelite and it all worked very nicely and sounded good.

A couple of things of note with Roon:
No spotify support with Roon and this is unlikely to change.
Tidal is the streaming service of choice, but although this offers a compressed service like spotify for the same monthly price as spotify, there is also a lossless hifi mode for twice the cost. But this also requires a much higher Internet bandwidth for streaming, I don't know if my 6mb/s will cut it...
No BBC iplayer support yet, but I hope this will get added, enough people have requested it.
No phone clients for remote control of Roon, only larger displays of tablets and ipads.
Hqplayer support is now clearly live in the Roon settings 🙂

I had sort of discarded squeezelite as I prefered the sound from MPD.

The HQPlayer NAA doesn't seem to work on Miero's image, this has been tried.

My media system is a Mac Mini I5 2.5Ghz windows based system, I still need to see how HQPlayer will perform on it, hopefully with the convolution which I'd like to have a look at as well.

For the new build I'm really only after DSD playback. I'm perfectly happy with the Foobar2000 interface for the DDDAC.

The streaming option ROON offers is very intresting. But for now I find it hard to justify a yearly $119 for this feature and a slick GUI.

I'll definitly give ROON a try when the time comes.

Yes, but two things to consider; firstly I'm currently using some of the less taxing filter options available in HQPlayer so I should have headroom to explore the full gamut of filters in time. secondly, performance will degrade as you load up the processors and you'll never get 100% of them so, in a timing dependent scenario such as music replay, you want to give the processor a reasonable workload.

Ray

Very interesting!

Btw, can Tidal be streamed into HQPlayer direct and get up sampled to DSD?

i.e. without going through Roon or other hoops and loops

It's a Jolly Xmas at my place this year 🙂

Tidal in DSD 256 🙂

All isn't totally rosy if you are using lower powered PC's. My broadwell I3 NUC that used to handle all PCM to DSD128 glitch free, can't do it anymore. 64 max, and only Native. DoP stutters even with 64. CPU load used to sit around 25-40% with DSD 128, now 60-65% with native DSD 64. Even without Roon, the problem is the HQplayer 3.12. Also it freezes on track changes and I have to reboot Roon once in awhile.

It may take a bit to smooth out some wrinkles.

In the meantime, sans HQPlayer, we could use Tidal -> USB DAC ( e.g. Sonny's AKM) ?

Do you have the same HQPlayer problem also with Roon off?
I have a feeling that running Roon at the same time will take resources away from HQPlayer.

Have you tried to allocate more resources to HQPlayer by making the process RT?
Have you tried increasing buffer time?

No difference with Roon on or off. Same CPU load. Buffer time is maxex out at 250ms

How do you make the process RT?
