Maggie Model MGIIc. Slapping Sound

I have a pair of 2c's. One of the pair has a slapping sound a high volume on low frequencies. I know that this is not that uncommon. It only happens on one speaker only. The other at the same level sounds fine.
it doesnt really seem like they are being overdriven. I am driving it with the HB running on 63vdc rails. Does anyone have experience with this and does it mean something needs repaired. No delamination. I repaired that on both.

As the lower the frequency, the more excursion is required for an adequate listening level, this seems like you are driving the mylar so it hits the magnets behind. As it happens only on one panel, you must have a slight physical difference between the 2 panels.

I am not sure whether the back of the magnet panel on MG-IIcs is slightly curved or not (so what I am about to say may not apply to IIcs) but I cured the 'slap' on a pair of MG-IIIs - which do have a curved metal back - about 20 years ago by putting them on the floor and then standing on the panel, in the middle, to increase the curvature slightly (thus making a bigger gap between the mylar and the magnet array).

This was according to the instructions sent to me by the factory, so I suggest you should get in touch with Magnepan about your IIcs.

Good luck,

Andy

one panel could also have lower resonance when excited it will slap.. nothing much you can do there except the former method. if the spacing difference is large compared to one and another there will be a sensitivity difference to. damping is second option. but magnepans are pretty well balanced usually to extend low frequency response. also the small holes in the metal plate already gives some form of damping.

You may be able to send them back to magnepan for restoration I have seen stories of people sending long out of production equipment back to them for repair with no issues. I do not have personal experience with this but I would not rule it out.

Yes...$4-600+shiping...you have like new...MG2cs....thay be glad to help.....never heard of any free work....but who knose....
I have the MG1c....an 2cs..one slap also....
I think it may be because the 2cs tweeter dose not go to the bottem of the panels....like all other models...
The 1cs are the best sounding out of all the none true ribbon ... of one driver type...well to me....
The 1c just a biger SMGa.......NO slap ever....I think the SMGa.. an the MG1c sound so good.....is there Series crossover ...an that thay only have one panels bottem........all others have 2-3- panel bottem...more bottems on the panels sound weard....hehe...hell I have had 10-15 pr of Maggys....over the years...
I also have the MG3a..these can buzz......an 2.5r......
I like the sound of the MC1 cs best. of all.........
As for standing on the panels..... I have seen this be for....I tried it....an the panels did not give any... if you try... don't move your feet....I only way 200lbs...........good luckif
