I've been wanting a pair of Tang Bang W8-1772s but my cost delivered in Au is $700. so I was looking in China where TBs are made and found these Aucharm WHFS-AU-P810s for nearly $300. less. A search on the model number found nothing. I trust I can get an opinion from the Full Ranger crowd.

-thanks, Mack

I'm lucky (one of the few times, as I also have trouble sourcing good drivers) to live near the head office of TB.

I emailed them and got myself a pair of W8-1772 directly from them. It is a great driver, but it is not an easy driver. It takes a lot of love to make it shine.

In my quest for finding good drivers for another project, I got a pair of Aucharm (the little 3incher you see advertised on that same page you linked).

That Aucharm is the worst of all the drivers I got so far... distortion is just unbearable.

I'm not saying this 8" driver is the same, but for that amount of money... I would make sure I get my money's worth. Because if it performs way below your expectations, that's money you will not see again.

For that sort of money, I would expect at least 101dB and not pay for the shiny, worthless, gold plated solder terminals.
Looks like an average speaker that is disguised as a proper one to me.

Take away the glitz and this is what you have; FC682637 - UNBRANDED - SPEAKER, 2-WAY FULL RANGE 40W 8" | CPC UK

101dB would be substantially louder than the most powerful (much more expensive) neo magnet Lowther, which is 98dB 'raw' and <95dB after eq.
Preliminary Measurements of the Lowther DX Series of Drivers
94dB is actually very high efficiency for a high Qts driver, which presumably wouldn't need the same eq.

101dB direct radiators are only slightly more common than unicorns.

if that Diatone cone/ whizzer hybrid is as good as the little L. Cao F6 6.5" driver then it could be pretty nice

here's the F6 in a Karlsonator prototype vs an Eminence Delta Pro-8a rated 97.6dB

mms isn't right in the specs above

What's wrong with it? Loading Mms, Cms, etc., specs into WinISD 0.7, it calculates everything the same as published except for Vas, which is only fractionally off at 107.87 L.

Anyway, assuming the specs and frequency response are accurate enough [big if], then except for a fragile diaphragm and having maybe 1 mm of 'safe' travel, limiting the LF to < 1 W unless there's some room boundary loading and/or driven with a high output impedance, it seems fine if a bit pricey. $300+/ea. just to get it to the USA would have me looking at a two way.

I was very pleasantly surprised quite recently by a pair of diy OB speakers running L Cao 8 inch full range drivers in my living room during a recent get together. First FR I have liked short of the TB W8-1772/1808 drivers. I have heard a few horrible FRs and tend to run the other way when encountered.

These ones specifically: http://www.onecaudio.com/lcao_eng.html

i think mms 15 g could be real,
if i see the data,
look better for the money a better driver

H1597-08 FA22RCZ

They are interesting. Good price. FR plot looks like a Lowther, but a bit flatter, the highs only about 10dB hotter on axis. 6mm Xmax is a lot, for a driver of this type. I like that the power handling is not a stupidly hyped number :)

For efficiency:

The specs state 94dB sensitivity, but the FR plot shows that's only true at about 1kHz. Putting the Fs, VAS and Qes into a calculator, I get 91.6 as the 'real' efficiency. The Madisound listing for the driver shows that, with passive eq, and with support under 200Hz (most likely from a back loaded horn or additional woofer), the resulting system would give about 89dB per watt.
