Windows 10

W10 is UGLY !! It literately offends the eyes.

Certainly no argument there. Its like staring at a glacier.

Performance wise I'm finding 8.1 to be the best of the bunch. The start up and shut down times are absolutely stellar at around 8 secs and 3 seconds respectively.

My new SSD (8.1 clean installed to avoid any issues with migrating from HDD to SSD) is pretty impressive too. Programs such as LibreOffice now open in around 1 to 2 seconds. A full image backup of my 25Gb C drive completes in 2 minutes, and a restore takes around the same time.

Andrew... if you are reading this, then this is the area to explore, not more and more RAM.

winsat result,
Disk Sequential 64.0 Read, 526.50 MB/s
Disk Random 16.0 Read, 426.66 MB/s

As has been mentioned before, win 8 is not faster than win 7 - only in startup and shutdown, even that has been explained as to why.
Your system is fast, because of your hardware, not your win8 over win7.
I have an i5 laptop with an average SSD, win7 that loads microsoft word in 1-2 seconds.
starts from hibernation in 4 seconds.
I don't believe win8 or win10 offered the end customer anything to justify a change (or very little).

Which is actually very modest by modern standards. Core i5 and 4Gb RAM Dell Vostro laptop.

Maybe its just me that's odd 🙂 but I took an instant dislike to W7 when it appeared, and that view never changed much while using it tbh. I took to 8.1 as soon as I trialled what was then the beta version of it and ended up buying a retail copy.

No , they are preparing us for the next stage.

Think of your local library. NO HDD's on the terminals. OS is loaded from a
central server.
Win10 will just become a local storage area for bloated 3'rd party caches-
the real OS will be cloud based.

For most users , having threats managed in Redmond will end the need for
antivirus programs/malware.

Your PC will become another TV (with censored interactivity).
"PC" will become "public corporate". Just a Google/M$/Facebook "box".

This .... after 20 years of letting the public manage the OS , will
streamline the experience. By 2020 , the prediction is that just
about all of us will compute/collaborate like this (All cloud).

I feel I must post this regards ADGUARD,

Yes works great but,,there is always a but isn't there.
If you get any sites locked out like google<<
You can do this.

Just go to settings..
Network..
Traffic filtering..
Filter HTTPS>>exclusions and copy and paste the address in the exclusion box.

Regards upgrading,

I have to use it for my job<<yes a PITA isn't it..:gnasher:
I notice there is a War going on regards ad blockers and money<<yes google is locking out people using ad blockers.
I just can't believe it..apparently they are losing millions in revenue...so never mind the average person that doesn't want to be swamped with C**p adverts.

Chrome ??
I can block trackers/ads - everything on Firefox ... never locked
out.
I totally ditched flash , Don't need to see any video ... I can read !!
Edit - ad guard would be FF/ghostery and adblock plus , free !

Yes true.
And I use a google approved extension called 'ublock origin' direct from google webstore.
Works good, I like the interface, and no google doe not block me.
Adblock plus is also good available from webstore.
both are free.

Then there is the move to HTML5 ads. Adblock misses some of them.
"u adblock" will catch more of these.
I suspect the blacklist vs. script type determines this.

"Ghostery" also has a good/bad side. It blocks the trackers while sending
the developer a list of those blocks.

I have 100MB internet , why would I need to block anything ?

Even with all that speed , a site like yahoo or CNN will load in half
the time without having to connect to all those 3'rd party tracking
servers. But ... some sites will disconnect you if you block their
trackers.

Not all ads are bad .. I let DIYA ads through - it supports the site.

I don't mind (below 1) - food is good. 🙂

(below 2) is a "bad ad" - leads to a dubious download. This was at the bottom
of DIYA. 🙁

For a long time google has given results based on popularity. I find it is counter-productive for those that do scientific searches where the search terms need to be taken literally and the subjects are not exactly 'popular'.

As a long time Mac guy I just cannot believe how idiotic these MS clowns are.

My wife needs a handicap mode to run some programs for her academic research. So last night we order Parallels and Windows 10 from her university. Parallels works fine. Turns out, though, MS actually killed the page with their ISO distribution for educational users, and after a chat and phone call we discovered they no interest in providing people who lawfully purchased a license to suffer through their idiot nonsense with said idiot nonsense. The software distributor was apologetic, said they've gotten a lot of complaints, but that MS is supposed to, you know, provide their software after you pay for your license. They claim (rightly or wrongly) that MS doesn't allow them to offer disks or USB sticks of the program. And indeed, there was no option to order hard media for windows, though she could for Parallels and Office 2016 (for a modern OS).

And MS wonders why their flagship stores are ghost towns while Apple's are always packed, or why if you go into any business class lounge at any major airport in the world you'll see a bunch of illuminated partially-eaten pieces of fruit. Why would people deal with MS's idiocy when they can possibly escape it?

I wonder why Windows is discussed here.
All here are complaining about how bad all these MS products are, instead of complaining about MS you can easily switch to that iBetter company products.

And installing Adblocks is nice, for the single user, but not so nice for the content producer offering it for free.
Bild in Germany now doesn't allow to read the content if Adblockers are used. Alternatively, one can pay for the services and doesn't see all these ads.
Right they are, this "for free" culture eventually has to be paid from someone.

Swallow the (in many cases unbearable, yes) advertising flood, or pay for it, this is something which we'll encounter even more in future. And it's OK.

Yahoo is now also blocking anyone using ad blockers.

That includes anyone trying to use the Email system, are these people self destructive or what?

I would use Mac or Linux but the job front requires it..

This could well be my last MS operating system..
http://www.pcworld.com/article/3006...ins-blocking-users-with-ad-block-enabled.html

MS edge has no support for ad blocking..wonder why...😀 NB Adblock is not compatible with Edge. To my knowledge there are no free blockers for edge.
