I may have gone off the rails after seeing your post:
It's just basic Linux. Audiolinux is optimized for audio. But for just straight NAA use from the command prompt, I'm not sure if there's any sonic benefit yet.

I asked Piero (the creator of Audiolinux) and he just said using Audiolinux for dedicated NAA use is like using a race car to drive the kids to school. Can't be bad, but used for the server OS, even greater benefits can be had.

So like what they say, if you know the meaning of life then you do not need to change religions 😀
 
Another question, since I am going to do DSD stuff then NAA must pick up ASIO drivers for Amanero on Win7. On the server side there is the control panel to select this if Amanero is connected directly but how would this happen on the client side? The NAA command window has no user input.
On the client side you do nothing.
On the server side you choose NAA (you may have more than one device) and Amanero ASIO device.

As your NAA PC can playback audio, it seems to me the problem resides on the network communication because NAA is not detected by server. That's why I suggested a different switch.

Thanks again, makes a lot of sense. If it is a network issue then even changing OS would not help. I am using the wifi network that looks fine. Perhaps, I will connect directly to the LAN ports of my router and see.

Yes you don't want to use wifi. Or even have a wifi card enabled in the NAA computer. Disable every feature you don't need in the Bios, and switch Windows to "adjust for best performance" mode.

That sound keep you going until you get your AudioLinux image.

Watch out for firewalls too. They can block it.

No the NAA makes a very noticeable difference in sound. Especially when the NAA is a small form factor low noise unit powered by linear supply.

Powerful computers well suited for HQplayer server use are usually noisy and power hungry.

The NAA system also buffers the audio into a Ram FIFO buffer to improve sound.

Why?
The boot of AudioLinux (and Linux kernels in general) could depend on special commands given to the bootloader (in this case syslinux). Some ways of starting the system could bypass these commands and start linux kernel directly.

Normally I suggest the "arch way", that can be a little bit more difficult, but where the user can learn how the system is working and why.
There is a huge wiki about almost everything on the archlinux site.

However, you can copy the image to USB stick (hard disk cloning) with the method or application (on linux or Windows) you prefer, provided that it is a copy bit by bit of an entire disk image (not of linux partition only). Audiolinux contains a full disk image, with bootloader, UEFI partition and OS partition.
This is not difficult, it is something that a computer shop is doing every day when a customer upgrade an old computer to a new system."

Likewise the server side will also benefit with a low noise hardware, after all this churns out the data stream to start with and we do not want this to be polluted!
 
That's why I'm going with an optical setup soon. Isolates 100% of the noise from the server computer.

Yes, this is great but I was thinking more about the source side itself. Imagine the great DSP algorithms being handled by a CPU running off noisy line supplies and vibrating drives. And as you have seen how the linear PSU of the NAA side improves SQ

Some say optically isolating the server from the NAA, eliminates this noise. Unless the data itself gets damaged, none of the detrimental effects of this noise should make it to the NAA. This is because the noise from the server can't pass through the optical transmission.

And the data isn't clocked yet, so jitter is a non issue.

Interesting to see but a few posts ago you clearly indicated that by just changing your NAA supplies to linear PSU (this must be massive) the SQ improved. Everything else remained the same with your setup, the data coming in could be noisy. So what exactly caused the improvement, at micro level within the NAA hardware?

The NAA will remain the same, powered with linear supply and everything. The connection between the server and NAA will be optical. This will isolate the noisy server computer from the NAA.

The improvement I experienced by powering the NAA with linear supplies is because the NAA is directly coupled to the DAC with the USB cable. This allows noise to transfer into the DAC because of the copper lines connecting the DAC and NAA.

I will be using the S03 isolator/reclocker just before the DAC so most likely this will be good enough rather than doing all the upstream improvements.
