Hello.
I am currently searching for an amp that will power my future desktop speakers, made with MarkAudio CHR-70a. I have seen that the TPA3116d2 is highly regarded here as top of the crop. So I have a question. How does it compare versus the STA508? Lets say these 2:
Breeze Audio tpa3116 2.0 digital audio amplifier 50WX2 mini stereo amplifier class d hifi amplifier board-in Amplifier from Consumer Electronics on Aliexpress.com | Alibaba Group
YJ STA508 amplifier board 24VDC 2.0 channel class D TC2000 80W + 80W for car amplifier with Potentiometer better TA2024 TA2020-in Amplifier from Consumer Electronics on Aliexpress.com | Alibaba Group
They are equally priced, sta having more power, 80+80 vs 50+50W.
But I rarely see the sta mentioned here, or used, compared to 3116. So, what keeps everybody from using it? Is there a major soundquality difference? Or because usually 3116 amps seem a bit cheaper? And a sidequestion, which of those would run better unmodded? Or what mods would be needed for STA to make it better? (The 3116 mods are well documented already).
Thanks

Cheapest bang for buck seems to be the new "dual chip" board.

Thanks for the sugestion, but I was trying to find answers about quality, not more power. As it is, I think both boards have more then enough power to drive a CHR-70 which is rated at ~20W, so I was curious about the STA508 which in theory sounds equal to 3116 but in practice on this forum is sparsely mentioned, compared to 3116. Almost inexistent. Why that is, I have no ideea
My Breeze 2.0 (bare board) is fine. The dual-chip board I bought recently is also good.
Have read of others having quality issues (wrong value components etc).
My understanding is the TPA3116 has potential for sounding better than the STA508.

thanks. THIS is exactly the kind of answer I was hoping to get. Do you have more details of why?TPA3116 has potential for sounding better than the STA508.
TPA3116 is a dedicated Class D audio amplifier.
The STA508 is a "40V 4.5A QUAD POWER HALF BRIDGE" (data sheet title)
So the 508 requires drive circuitry and this includes PWM circuitry and external feedback loops. Much can go wrong with this. (It can be done, not saying it can't)
The 3116 is all internal...very short paths and consistent by IC design.
xrk971 made an "air board" and sounded good.
I doubt if that type of circuit could be done with a 508.
(the 3116 also has a current limit of 7.5A)

As for power ummm.... My "Breeze" board can easily fill my 4.5Mx4.5M lounge to the point that parties if the neighbours are away would be easy. That's into Tannoy E11 speakers, 8ohm.
For near field use, buy a catchers mitt (baseball) just in case one of the speaker leaps out under enthusiastic use! 🙂
Thanks all for detailed answers. I now understand and will get a 3116 for me. I will start reading the dedicated thread
The JY Blue board (at least mine 🙂 has an increased Presence at 14+ khz which is Good for the Mark Audio drivers which are/can be rolled off in the upper frequencies.. a good match up imo.
I assume that the board you are talking about is YJ3116 2.0 board, the one copied from Danzz designed right here.
In any case, the MA drivers seem to have increased presence from 10 kHz to 14 kHz, not rolloff... Or at least that's how I read the response curve
