I have a problem with the power supply arcing around the flyback transformer area on my Protek 6502 oscilloscope. I have a PDF copy of the service manual downloaded from Elektrotanya,it is for the 6502,6504 and 6506 models combined but it doesnt make sense because it shows parts that should be there when they shouldnt and vice a versa? I cant use the parts list either because thats out of wack as well? Has anyone had any experience working on these scopes and can give me some ideas on how to fix it because its got me hopelessly confused at the moment!😕

Many of the commercial bathroom type silicon sealants release acetic acid whilst curing (vinegar smell) - which can corrode any metal it comes into contact with.

Electronics grade types are available, such as Dow Corning 744, but are more expensive and not as readily available.

Ill give it a good scrub up first and see how I go from there? If it still arcs Ill paint the silicon on carefuly avoiding any metal. If I get any on the metal I can always cut it off. Thanks for letting me know about that John,it will save me some trouble down the track.🙂

RTV silicones

Good Day,

RTV silicones are great for this, and have sufficient dielectric strength for good isolation of HV circuits. They are non-corrosive, in contrast to bathroom silicones as mentioned.
They have been used by many Tektronix yahoo group members, for repairing oscilloscopes.

See http://www.wacker.com/cms/media/publications/downloads/6019_EN.pdf for an example

RTV silicones are easily available from many distributors, including Mouser, Digikey and CONRAD.

Cheers,

M.

When a manual covers multiple models of something, there will often be parts variations between them, so there will be part in one and not another and vice versa. Coukd be notes in the margin stating part X not loaded on model Y.
