What words or phrases in audio ads or reviews....

....tend to set off your BS detectors?

Sorry, I'm in a cranky mood tonight, after browsing on some review sites. Thought it might be interesting to see what kinds of wording bothers other people here. Not whole topics or arguments, just some ways things are presented that tend toward blowing the writer's credibility.

Here are some words that can make me think the writer is either making stuff up, stretching the truth, or maybe doesn't really know what he is talking about:

  • "Period." Written as if a complete sentence, meaning "discussion closed". Well, ok guy, go ahead, take your ball and go home. But wait.... it's not your ball! ...So discussion and even full-out disbelief can and probably will happen!
  • "Simply...". Similar to "Period.", and pretends an expertise that usually isn't in much evidence in the rest of the text. If you want to dispel doubt, do it with information, not by telling how simple it is to you (so we should be embarrassed to argue?)
  • " correct...". As an adjective describing how something is applied. Is there such a thing as being 'Audiophilically Correct'? If something has to be done one way to get what is described, better say what that is!
  • "...phase problems", seldom with any details. Sometimes with a description that seems to defy all evidence.

Please feel free to blow off steam and add more.....

Well, you know that "the ear" in more sensitive to the pitch and very seldom to phase.
The ears are making constantly, due to the symmetry and the special conformation of the skull ( we're not entering into endo-ossean sound transmission, aren't we ? ) , a phase analysis or time arrival comparation between the two sounds captioned.

Of course, in sound reproduction the phase can change considerably...from filters to [excess group delay]

Quantum, can anyone cite an instance of audio marketing, where this word was not followed by complete horsepucky?

Most quoted frequency response figures (How many ways to confuse with something that looks superficially like data, 'tis as bad as the unemployment figures).....

Regards, Dan.

You mean like a DF96?
Precisely! Anyone trying to flog audio gear with a name like that is clearly into snake oil, whether or not it actually contains a battery RF pentode.

Incidentally, the forum sent me an email saying that someone has been trying to log in as me but kept getting the password wrong. The IP address given (in the US - I expected China) is apparently known/suspected of being associated with spammers. Should I feel flattered, or insulted, or look out for the DF96 Tube Buffer being flogged on ebay - runs 12AX7 from +6V supply rail for excellent tube sound, blue LED uplights, tube rectifier, many satisfied customers (most of them completely deaf).

"As seen on TV" means something is positively amazing.
"Never before seen on TV" means even more so.
------
I find these two offensive:

"Export quality" which means local people get the rubbish they deserve; the good stuff is reserved for overseas people.

"Fully imported" which means overseas people can make stuff far superior to local clowns.

"Audio-grade", which in electronics means "good enough for audio, but poor DC performance", or "good enough for audio, useless for RF", but now means "magically better than regular grade, and insanely expensive".

In audio reviews, incredibly detailed descriptions of differences in "sound stage", like with amplifier A vs amplifier B the bass player was six inches to the left and a foot further back. (I don't believe your description, but what you describe is not something I would care about anyway.)

Finally: "blacker background".

Oh yea, "audio grade" is a classic.

Somewhat disturbing when you see TI doing it, it being the sort of thing more expected of over priced electrolytic caps.

"Cryogenic" deserves to be somewhere on this list surely?
