I hear in Beijing that if you breathe through the right material that it stops you getting sick - strange beliefs that some people have ... 😎

No different than audio mythology.
Without a controlled test environment, whether you hear something or do not hear something is indistinguishable from bias induced hallucination. These hallucinations are indistinguishable from reality.
Without controlled testing actually hearing past one's bias is impossible. No one is immune to the effects of bias... they are unconscious. No amount of conscious thought can change that.
I've really made a serious attempt to understand what this thread is all about but I am none the wiser now than I was a week ago. In the spirit of keeping a open mind and wishing to expand my range of interests I will keep on trying. Perhaps there will by a breakthrough and all will become clear but it hasn't happened yet.
PS This is not the only thread I have puzzled over. No prizes for suggesting that I might be suffering from a feeble mind. I readily admit to it!

I had a "audiophile life changing experience" that proved uncontrolled testing could not to be trusted, irrespective of how strongly you think you hear something. It is pure ego to think differently.
When we do tweaking, without measuring, we have to believe in our ears. Sometimes I was not sure whether I really heard differences or not, but I always follow my feeling.
With times, I have learned that this "feeling" is not something to be under-estimated.
Lately I was introduced to Foobar ABX. Using Foobar is very different with tweaking. But I found out that Foobar ABX is sufficient to validate our hearing, tho in a different way.
With Foobar ABX I can hear (8/8) absolute phase reversal and audibility of zobel network. In real life I found it easier by using feeling.
With Foobar ABX I only know if there is a difference but often don't know which one is better. In real tweaking I will easily know which one is better because I simply use my "feeling", i.e. knowing how much I'm disturbed.
All we need is
A deaf super-engineer.
Shurely, you can trust one of those with measurements
Before QUAD was sold to China and under founder Peter Walker they did no listening tests, everything QUAD made was designed and tweaked by measurements alone.
There were no facilities to listen to QUAD products (or any other) on the premises according to Peter since he couldn't see the point.
Jay,
Those are two different things you have mentioned. Foobar ABX helps determine if there *is* an audible difference. It has nothing to do with your preference or how you feel about it.
Using Foobar ABX is a great way to verify whether or not what you are hearing is real.
If what you hear is real, identify the different sounds ought to be simple. If, on the other hand, what you are hearing in sighted listening is a bias induced hallucination then you will be unable to distinguish between A and B.....
I find it astonishing at just how much this happens. Apparently, it happens so often that audiophiles reject those results.... insisting that they can hear a difference, but not when asked to use *only* their ears because that sort of listening is unnatural!

Yes, Foobar ABX helps determine if there *is* audible difference. But what to listen to in Foobar is different with what to listen to in real tweaking. So even if I can pass an ABX test, it doesn't mean that I hear what I heard in a real tweaking, because I listen to different things.
What ABX result provides is, a proof that I have a good hearing, such that my "feeling" about the sound should have a value, or could be as good as the ABX result.

No, no, it is not that simple! 😎

I really understand the situation. Surprise?
