Hello,
Been using the TA2020 for a portable boombox like everybody else. I'm now looking for a amplifier with a little more power. going to use a 6s lipo, so voltage should be around 22-26v.
I came across the TDA7492MV, but it doesn't appear to be 4 ohm stable.

TPA3116D2, which appears to be paralleled, but I believe that it is only beneficial if the speaker resistance is lowered (ex. 4 ohm to 2 ohm). I was told that running the TPA3116D2 in PBTL would only be a gain at 2 ohm and non-beneficial at 4 ohm. Is this correct?

There doesn't appear to be a problem with using the TDA7492MV on music into 4ohms. Probably it can't do sustained full power into 4ohms (that will go beyond 50W), but with music it'll do fine. After all the DS does show an output filter for 4ohms (page 23, fig 27).
tpa3116 in pbtl would still give 50w into 4ohm at 24V.
26V might be too much for the 3116, as its overvoltage protection kicks in around that voltage.
i ordered a tas5611 board yesterday.
that might be interesting to you, too.
you can also look at TDA7498E.

100% certain not for 4 ohm load, the E version mentioned above might be, I quit trying STM chips, but don't know the E.
I think that I'm just going to go with the tpa3116 and only use one channel in the amp. My understanding is that the current drain on the other channel will be low at a watt or two. I'm working on a boombox design (read the boominator thread) and wanted some input.
Thanks,
Thanks,
Bad idea imo. Do put chip in PBTL, then you don't need a dummy load.I think that I'm just going to go with the tpa3116 and only use one channel in the amp. 24V with a 50W into 4ohms load ???
50W into 4r0 is equivalent to 20Vpk and 5Apk into the 4r0 test load.
To get that 20Vpk (=40Vpp) you need at least 42V supply.
You CANNOT get 50W into 4ohms from 24Vdc. That is why you can't find a circuit that achieves that.
You need to cheat:
either change the supply voltage, or double up the chips into bridged format.
To get to a target of 50W into 4ohms you need two amplifiers each rated as 25W into 2ohms. This is equivalent to 10Vpk (20Vpp) and 5Apk and this is possible from a 24Vdc supply.
BTW to get 50W into your 4ohms load the peak current capability of the single channel and it's PSU will be at least double and preferably three times that 5Apk. But you have two channels, the combined PSU for the bridged amplifier will need to be able to supply 3*5Apk + 3*5Apk = 30Apk
Bridged duty is very demanding of the two amplifiers and the PSU.

50w into 2 ohm gets me 10V and 5A, well I do something wrong maybe, but the PSU does seemsmore important than most believe/calculate with these BTL 3116's, maybe they forget the bridge part, I don't really know.
No,50w into 2 ohm gets me 10V and 5A, well I do something wrong maybe, ...................
50W into 2r0 is not 10V
50W into 2r0 is equivalent to 14.142Vpk and 7.071Apk
You would need twice 14.142 + a margin for amplifier and PSU drops/sags.
You might hit the target with 32Vdc supply and it would have to hold up better than 30Vdc while delivering 7Apk.
Bad idea imo. Do put chip in PBTL, then you don't need a dummy load.
Why would I need a dummy load if I'm only running one side of the amp?
I've been running a ta2020 with only one channel for years now without a problem, why would the tpa3116 be any different?
Thank you
TDA7492MV is already in BTL (bridge tied load) format so no cheating is necessary.
I looked at the tda7492mv, but I don't think that it's 4ohm stable. Looking at the data sheet it appears to only go to 6ohm. Is this correct?
Thanks
I had a 4Ohm Woofer running on one channel of a black TDA7498 with no problems.
Some sellers claim that is possible, too.
But i wouldn't put money on it, that it works with high power for a long time.
Then there is this 7498 mono board on aliexpress:

The price is much lower atm than it usually is.
I'm close to buying it.
It might work with lower voltages.
It should be possible to not use the preamp.
edit:
i just read that the TDA8932 should drive 4 Ohm load only with lower voltages than you want.
Some sellers claim that is possible, too.

Well, TI claimed that number. In the data sheet, TI showed that at 24 V, into a load of 4 ohm (resistive I presume), the chip output can get to 75 W at 10% THD + noise. Or 60 W at 1% THD + noise. The "standard" configuration of the chip is in BTL mode and one can modified it into PBTL if low impedance drive (to 2 ohm) is desired.
Regards,
24V in BTL gives 17Vrms, then P=U^2/R = 17Vrms^2/(Rspk+2*Rds_on) = 17Vrms^2/4.2R =68Wrms. I don't see a problem here. If the amp can deliver 17Vrms/4.2R=4Arms and/or 5.64Apeak, all fine. If you only need Mono and the Amp supports PBTL, do that to get a bit more effiency and better thermal load balancing. (TPA3132D2, MAX9709 and other will fit the bill)
You are proving that you cannot read and interpret a datasheet.Well, TI claimed that number.
As I showed in my earlier post these numbers are impossible. In the data sheet, TI showed that at 24 V, into a load of 4 ohm (resistive I presume), the chip output can get to 75 W at 10% THD + noise. Or 60 W at 1% THD + noise.
Then do a bridged arrangement. The "standard" configuration of the chip is in BTL mode and one can modified it into PBTL if low impedance drive (to 2 ohm) is desired.....
for 50W into 4ohms you need two amplifiers each rated at 25W into 2ohms.
I gave that information in my earlier post.
You also need to look at peak current demand. Again I gave some information for a pair of bridged amplifiers.
In a stereo arrangement you would have 4amplifiers, each rated for 25W into 2ohms and the transient demand would be around 60Apk.
