Time for new loudspeaker sub-forum(s)?

Actually I am very happy with this site's broad topics, unlike some other sites which divides everything to small pieces. It forces me to read discussions on other types of loudspeakers which I initially did not have any interest on.

Even if the subforums are created there will always be confusions. What if I build an OB line array with pro drivers and DSP? Should it be in OB, Line array, Active, or HE subforums? Today it us simply a: MULTIWAY 🙂

[In reference to "Digital Line Level"....]
That forum is for "Source and Line" stuff like a CD player, etc. not for "in stream" processing like a DSP crossover system.

Are you having a bad day, Charlie?

Obviously, Source and Line stuff goes in "Digital Source" or "Analogue Source". Digital Line Level is for "DACs, Digital Crossovers, Equalizers, etc." according to the forum description. I don't understand your comment.

More sub-forums makes plenty of sense as far as categorization, but I count twelve threads in the multi-way forum with posts in the last twelve hours, and that's just not nearly enough to consider splitting things up more if you ask me.
This is very much the argument made by the site owner and the moderation team. New forums have been created, but many are not because they don't pass this simple test.

The forum with the largest number of threads is Multi-Way at 30.5K+, so it's unique. If any forum is a target for subdivision, it's this one.

Because it is so broad, Multi-Way has become a catch-all category. If you try to post a new topic, you realize how quickly topics fade from the first page and how difficult it is to sustain a dialogue on a single topic. Adding one or two subtopics to Loudspeakers could help slow the pace a bit in Multi-Way, and it would provide a place for better discussion of these other topics.

"Amplifiers" has a couple of successful specialized forums that are subdivisions of Solid State--with Chip Amps, Class D and Headphone Systems (for the most part). The proposed subdivisions discussed in this thread have a similar relationship to the parent category--they are implementation technologies or well-defined sub-classes of multi-way loudspeakers. Right now there are 7 sub-forums under Amplifiers, but only 4 sub-forums (fora?) under Loudspeakers. So the precedent for providing additional sub-forums under Loudspeakers already exists. Imagine Solid State without Class D, Chips Amps and Headphone Systems and you can understand why some people here see a problem with Multi-Way.

I wouldn't have raised this issued if I hadn't felt some frustration at not finding suitable areas on diyAudio to discuss some current-technology audio topics that I find interesting and that I think others would find exciting. I'm very much interested in advanced line array topics, but there really isn't a good place for people with that interest to "meet" and share ideas. Also, I'm interested in active speakers, using multichannel amps with embedded DSP for low-cost solutions. Both of these interest areas are based on fairly new technologies, but the diyAudio categories for Loudspeakers are a bit dated, and there just isn't a good place to discuss them. I wouldn't have a problem with combining line arrays with high efficiency designs, as I'm also interested in those technologies. But trying to address those unconventional technologies in a catch-all category of "Multi-Way" feels like an attempt to rail-road that sub-forum, as it certainly doesn't meet the definition for this category ("Conventional loudspeakers with crossovers").

Change happens. Could the site owner and the moderation team take a close look at the Multi-Way forum to rethink whether new sub-forums in Loudspeakers would provide a better exchange of ideas and make diyAudio even more popular?

Neil,
After seeing this conversation this morning I posted a new thread under multi-way loudspeakers. I am attempting to start a thread that will incorporate as much of what you are talking about from the input section as USB or Bluetooth through a dac and dsp control with amplification and xo integration. I am working on a self powered speaker system and I need to integrate everything, there is no place anywhere on this site where that is in one place.

The thread title is: An Active loudspeaker UNIFICATION thread

I hope I can attract enough attention to keep this idea alive.

But new readers dont know, what has been discussed when or why.
They have no other way to start, than look stupid, ill informed or plain curious.
Not much chance to teach old dogs new tricks.
Besserwisser-wall to climb.

Snup,
One thing I have seen is that the moderator is asked to remove posts that are not relevant to the conversation. This should be done more often and the first post can be edited to do just what you just suggested and list the best answers or the best relevant posts. This should only be possible by the original poster of the thread.

Snup,
I don't think the way the site is set up you can delete a post without the moderator doing it, not even the original poster has that control. Once you put up a post you can't remove it yourself after a certain amount of time it seems.

Even with the search tools, you have to read a lot of posts on some subjects, before you just have to give in and ask somebody, you think might know.
Actually I think this forum is as good as it gets. Really not much to complain about.

plus one

I like this idea. HE would include line arrays and provide an area on this board to discuss some of the more esoteric loudspeaker designs that don't fit well into any of the existing diyAudio thread categories. I agree that an HE forum would have broad enough appeal to ensure good participation.

I agree with this, also. There is a separate thread to discuss DSP components (Digital Line Level) and there are amplifier threads, but nowhere to discuss system-level active loudspeaker design and associated tools. This category might also off-load the class-D forum, which has those long discussions on Boominator systems that go well beyond class D issues. It would also address the rapidly-growing sound bar and Bluetooth/wireless speaker segments. I think this would become a very active forum and help keep the existing forums stay focused on their own topics.

Plus one!
